Ecclesiastes 4:1-6

Rachel Workman: Again, I observed all the oppression that takes place under the sun. I saw the tears of the oppressed, with no one to comfort them. The oppressors have great power, and their victims are helpless. So I concluded that the dead are better off than the living. But most fortunate of all are those who are not yet born. For they have not seen all the evil that is done under the sun.
Then I observed that most people are motivated to success because they envy their neighbors. But this, too, is meaningless—like chasing the wind.
Fools fold their idle hands,
    leading them to ruin.”
And yet,
“Better to have one handful with quietness
than two handfuls with hard work
    and chasing the wind.”
I can't believe how true these verses are today. The oppressors have great power, and their victims are helpless. I think this might be true for those who are don't follow Christ. But we are not helpless. Then I observed that most people are motivated to success because they envy their neighbors.Could this speak any truer? Envy has no place in our hearts. Fools fold their idle hands,
    leading them to ruin.”
The problem with the idle hands is the people with folded hands are leading those who work hard to ruin with them.

John Burnett:  Again I looked and saw all the oppression that was taking place under the sun:
I saw the tears of the oppressed—
    and they have no comforter;
power was on the side of their oppressors—
    and they have no comforter.
And I declared that the dead,
    who had already died,
are happier than the living,
    who are still alive.
But better than both
is the one who has never been born,
who has not seen the evil
that is done under the sun.
And I saw that all toil and all achievement spring from one person’s envy of another. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.
Fools fold their hands
    and ruin themselves.
Better one handful with tranquillity
    than two handfuls with toil
    and chasing after the wind.

We are so blessed to have the whole cannon of scripture because we now know what happens to people when they die.  Those who have died in Christ are happier beyond what we can fathom, but those who have died, who are not in Christ have no happiness at all.  They have eternal conscious torment, which brings about weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Tomorrow’s reading for Ecclesiastes 4:7-12
I observed yet another example of something meaningless under the sun. This is the case of a man who is all alone, without a child or a brother, yet who works hard to gain as much wealth as he can. But then he asks himself, “Who am I working for? Why am I giving up so much pleasure now?” It is all so meaningless and depressing.
Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed. 10 If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble. 11 Likewise, two people lying close together can keep each other warm. But how can one be warm alone? 12 A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken.

Ecclesiastes 3:18-22

Rachel Workman: 18 I also thought about the human condition—how God proves to people that they are like animals. 19 For people and animals share the same fate—both breathe[a] and both must die. So people have no real advantage over the animals. How meaningless! 20 Both go to the same place—they came from dust and they return to dust. 21 For who can prove that the human spirit goes up and the spirit of animals goes down into the earth? 22 So I saw that there is nothing better for people than to be happy in their work. That is our lot in life. And no one can bring us back to see what happens after we die.
Of course we have a real advantage over animals. Salvation and eternal life is the main one.

John Burnett:  18 I also said to myself, “As for humans, God tests them so that they may see that they are like the animals. 19 Surely the fate of human beings is like that of the animals; the same fate awaits them both: As one dies, so dies the other. All have the same breath[a]; humans have no advantage over animals.  Everything is meaningless. 20 All go to the same place; all come from dust, and to dust all return. 21 Who knows if the human spirit rises upward and if the spirit of the animal goes down into the earth?”
22 So I saw that there is nothing better for a person than to enjoy their work, because that is their lot. For who can bring them to see what will happen after them?
Verse 19 is interesting because we know that humans have several advantages over the animals.  Humans are made in God’s Image and are the only beings in His creation that can know God through His Word.  This is a huge advantage as we are the only beings that can have eternal life through the truth of His word.  We know that the human spirit will rise upward when we are born of the Spirit and belong to Jesus Christ.

Ecclesiastes 3:16-17

Rachel Workman: 16 I also noticed that under the sun there is evil in the courtroom. Yes, even the courts of law are corrupt! 17 I said to myself, “In due season God will judge everyone, both good and bad, for all their deeds.”
Still very true today. I hope at the end of my days that God judges more good in me than bad.

John Burnett:  16 And I saw something else under the sun:
In the place of judgment—wickedness was there,
in the place of justice—wickedness was there.
Power corrupts and this prophesy sure does resemble the courts of today that justify abortion, gay marriage, and let murderers go.
17 I said to myself,
“God will bring into judgment
both the righteous and the wicked,
for there will be a time for every activity,
a time to judge every deed.”
As Christians, we know that we will be judged based on Christ’s righteousness and that our activities or works will be rewarded.  Those who have not repented of their sins put their trust in Jesus Christ alone are judged as the wicked and their works are like rotten fruit and dirty rags.  We are called to forgive because vengeance is mine says the Lord.  He commands us to forgive in Ephesians 4:32 the few times people sin against us.  Our example is Jesus forgiving us for the millions of sins we commit against Him and His law.

Pat Bell: It never fails to amaze me how true the words are in today's world! Have mercy.
