Matthew 7:24-29

Rachel Workman:
24 “Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock. 25 Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock. 26 But anyone who hears my teaching and doesn’t obey it is foolish, like a person who builds a house on sand. 27 When the rains and floods come and the winds beat against that house, it will collapse with a mighty crash.”

28 When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, 29 for he taught with real authority—quite unlike their teachers of religious law.
They were amazed because Jesus was the authority and their hearts told them so. Every one of us will experience torrent floodwaters. It's up to us to be wise or foolish. If we are wise we listen and we apply his word to our lives. We trust in his promises and blessings. And when the rain comes we stand firm in our faith because we built our faith on solid grounds.

John Burnett: 24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and [a]acts on them, [b]may be compared to a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 And the rain fell, and the [c]floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock. 26 Everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not [d]act on them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27 The rain fell, and the [e]floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and it fell—and great was its fall.” On Christ, the solid rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand, all other ground is sinking sand. One of my favorite hymns based on these verses of course. We know that there will be times in our lives when turmoil will happen. When we act on his words, by repenting of our sins and believing the gospel, our house will not fall because it is now an eternal house that he has been preparing for almost 2000 years. This is a great promise we have in Jesus Christ.
28 [f]When Jesus had finished these words, the crowds were amazed at His teaching; 29 for He was teaching them as one having authority, and not as their scribes. Those who have had our eyes opened by the Holy Spirit have the ability to determine the truth and who speaks with authority when we hear it. There is no higher authority than Jesus Christ.

Allen Michaels: 24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. To build “on the rock” means to be a hearing, responding disciple, not a phony, superficial one. Practicing obedience becomes the solid foundation to weather the storm of life. We can learn more on putting into practice what we hear in James 1:22-27.See below.25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. Like a house of cards, the fool’s life crumbles. Most people do not deliberately seek to build on a false or inferior foundation; instead, they just don’t think about their life’s purpose. Many people are headed for destruction, not out of stubbornness but out of thoughtlessness. Part of our responsibility as believers is to help others stop and think about where their lives are headed and to point out the consequences of ignoring Christ’s message.27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”
28 When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, 29 because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law. Jesus spoke with a new authority—his own. He didn’t need to quote anyone because he was the original Word (John 1:1). See below.
22 But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves. 23 For if you listen to the word and don’t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror.24 You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like. 25 But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don’t forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it.
26 If you claim to be religious but don’t control your tongue, you are fooling yourself, and your religion is worthless. 27 Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you.(James 1:22-27)
In the beginning the Word already existed.
The Word was with God,
and the Word was God.
(John 1:1)
