Proverbs 1:8-19

Rachel Workman: My child,[a] listen when your father corrects you.
    Don’t neglect your mother’s instruction.
What you learn from them will crown you with grace
    and be a chain of honor around your neck. If only I could convince my children this is true. They are hell bend on proving this scripture wrong.
10 My child, if sinners entice you,
    turn your back on them! Good advice even for adults. If you hang around someone who encourages sin or justifies it stop doing it. Why spend time with anyone who would tear you down in any way?Life is too short. Instead build your relationships around people who encourage you and uplift you and keep you on the straight and narrow path.
11 They may say, “Come and join us.
    Let’s hide and kill someone!
    Just for fun, let’s ambush the innocent!
12 Let’s swallow them alive, like the grave[b];
    let’s swallow them whole, like those who go down to the pit of death.
13 Think of the great things we’ll get!
    We’ll fill our houses with all the stuff we take.
14 Come, throw in your lot with us;
    we’ll all share the loot.”
15 My child, don’t go along with them!
    Stay far away from their paths.
16 They rush to commit evil deeds.
    They hurry to commit murder.
17 If a bird sees a trap being set,
    it knows to stay away.
18 But these people set an ambush for themselves;
    they are trying to get themselves killed.
19 Such is the fate of all who are greedy for money;
    it robs them of life. Wow, these words hit home today. Being greedy for money robs you of life. I think this is true for anything we are greedy with. I find lately I've been greedy with more than one thing.

Pat Bell: My child,[a] listen when your father corrects you.
    Don’t neglect your mother’s instruction.
What you learn from them will crown you with grace
    and be a chain of honor around your neck.

God gave us our parents to help guide us in life, but it ultimately rest on us to follow these instruction. As it ultimately falls on us to follow our Fathers instruction.
10 My child, if sinners entice you,
    turn your back on them!
11 They may say, “Come and join us.
    Let’s hide and kill someone!
    Just for fun, let’s ambush the innocent!
12 Let’s swallow them alive, like the grave[b];
    let’s swallow them whole, like those who go down to the pit of death.
13 Think of the great things we’ll get!
    We’ll fill our houses with all the stuff we take.
14 Come, throw in your lot with us;
    we’ll all share the loot.”

15 My child, don’t go along with them!
    Stay far away from their paths.
16 They rush to commit evil deeds.
    They hurry to commit murder.
17 If a bird sees a trap being set,
    it knows to stay away.
18 But these people set an ambush for themselves;
    they are trying to get themselves killed.
19 Such is the fate of all who are greedy for money;
    it robs them of life.

The devil is always whispering…thank you Lord for making me strong! Help me to become stronger.

Krista Cook: We should always be willing to listen to correction -not only from parents but from wiser Christians who have been there before.
God places specific people in our lives to help us.  It's our job to listen

Allen Michaels: Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction
    and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.
Children learn values, morals, and priorities by observing how their parents act and react every day. If parents exhibit a deep reverence for and dependence on God, the children will catch these attitudes. We must let them see our reverence for God. Teach them right living by giving worship an important place in our family life. We should be reading the Bible together as a family. I find it amazing how children pick up on our hypocrisy faster than they pick up on the positive messages we are trying to instill into them.
They are a garland to grace your head
    and a chain to adorn your neck.
This proverb almost sounds like a father trying to talk his son out of joining a gang.
10 My son, if sinful men entice you,
    do not give in to them.
11 If they say, “Come along with us;
    let’s lie in wait for innocent blood,
    let’s ambush some harmless soul;
12 let’s swallow them alive, like the grave,
    and whole, like those who go down to the pit;
13 we will get all sorts of valuable things
    and fill our houses with plunder;
14 cast lots with us;
    we will all share the loot”—
There are two kinds of temptations at work here. The first is the obvious kind: the temptation to kill and steal. The second is less obvious, but no less insidious: the temptation to go along with the crowd. “Come along with us” and “throw in your lot with us” are music to a teenager’s ears. Few can resist the seduction of that siren song, let’s. One wonders how many sins children commit not because they want to do wrong, but because they don’t want to be left out.
15 my son, do not go along with them,
    do not set foot on their paths;
16 for their feet rush into evil,
    they are swift to shed blood.
17 How useless to spread a net
    where every bird can see it!
18 These men lie in wait for their own blood;
    they ambush only themselves!
19 Such are the paths of all who go after ill-gotten gain;
    it takes away the life of those who get it.
We must ask God for wisdom to recognize any greedy desire before it destroys us. God will help us overcome it.
Sin is enticing because it offers a quick route to prosperity and makes us feel like one of the crowd. But when we go along with others and refuse to listen to the truth, our own appetites become our masters, and we’ll do anything to satisfy them. Sin, even when attractive, is deadly. We must learn to make choices, not on the basis of expensive possessions or short-range pleasure, but in view of the long-range effects. Sometimes this means steering clear of people who want to entice us into activities that we know are wrong. We can’t be friendly with sin and expect our lives to remain unaffected.

Monday's reading for 1 Corinthians 1:1-9

This letter is from Paul, chosen by the will of God to be an apostle of Christ Jesus, and from our brother Sosthenes.
I am writing to God’s church in Corinth,[a] to you who have been called by God to be his own holy people. He made you holy by means of Christ Jesus,[b] just as he did for all people everywhere who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours.
May God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give you grace and peace.
I always thank my God for you and for the gracious gifts he has given you, now that you belong to Christ Jesus. Through him, God has enriched your church in every way—with all of your eloquent words and all of your knowledge. This confirms that what I told you about Christ is true. Now you have every spiritual gift you need as you eagerly wait for the return of our Lord Jesus Christ. He will keep you strong to the end so that you will be free from all blame on the day when our Lord Jesus Christ returns. God will do this, for he is faithful to do what he says, and he has invited you into partnership with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
