Rachel Workman: 45 Immediately Jesus made his disciples get into the boat and
go on ahead of him to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd. 46 After
leaving them, he went up on a mountainside to pray.
47 Later
that night, the boat was in the middle of the lake, and he was alone on land. 48 He
saw the disciples straining at the oars, because the wind was against them.
Shortly before dawn he went out to them, walking on the lake. He was about to
pass by them, 49 but when they saw him walking on the lake,
they thought he was a ghost. They cried out, 50 because they
all saw him and were terrified.
Immediately
he spoke to them and said, “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” 51 Then
he climbed into the boat with them, and the wind died down. They were
completely amazed, 52 for they had not understood about the
loaves; their hearts were hardened. I've read this verse before many times
but this is the first time the hardening of hearts has made sense to me. I've
read many times that God hardened the hearts of people but I've never really
grasped it. Jesus multiplied the 5 loaves to feed 5000 and the disciples didn't
understand how due to disbelief. It's the refusal of believing what we
can't comprehend that causes the hardening of hearts.
53 When
they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret and anchored there. 54 As
soon as they got out of the boat, people recognized Jesus. 55 They
ran throughout that whole region and carried the sick on mats to wherever they
heard he was. 56 And wherever he went—into villages, towns or
countryside—they placed the sick in the marketplaces. They begged him to let
them touch even the edge of his cloak, and all who touched it were healed.

is faithful. All things are possible through Him for those who love God,
even something as simple as calming the wind is nothing for the One who has
overcome sin and death. This sinful world we live in is like stormy seas
and Jesus Christ is the only One who can calm the seas and heal us of our sin
condition. The faith of those who were being healed should be an example
for us as our hope is in Him. He is the way, the truth, and the life and
no one comes to father, but through Him alone. The sick of Jesus’s day
knew He was the only One who could heal them. It is unfortunate that so
many people know He is the only one who can heal them but they choose not to be
healed. They love their sin more than they love their Savior.

Tomorrow's reading for Mark 7:1-8
5 So the Pharisees and teachers of the law asked Jesus, “Why don’t your disciples live according to the tradition of the elders instead of eating their food with defiled hands?”
6 He replied, “Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written:
“‘These people honor me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me.
7 They worship me in vain;
their teachings are merely human rules.’[b]
8 You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to human traditions.”
