Rachel Workman:
19
Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual
edification. 20 Do not destroy the work of God for the sake of food. All food
is clean, but it is wrong for a person to eat anything that causes someone else
to stumble. 21 It is better not to eat meat or drink wine or to do anything
else that will cause your brother or sister to fall.
22 So whatever you believe about these things keep between yourself and God. Blessed is the one who does not condemn himself by what he approves. 23 But whoever has doubts is condemned if they eat, because their eating is not from faith; and everything that does not come from faith is sin.[c]
22 So whatever you believe about these things keep between yourself and God. Blessed is the one who does not condemn himself by what he approves. 23 But whoever has doubts is condemned if they eat, because their eating is not from faith; and everything that does not come from faith is sin.[c]
Everything
that does not come from faith is sin. I don't recall having read that verse
before although I know I've read this book several times. I can see how this
verse can be taken out of context.
All
Paul is saying is that if you don't have absolute faith that the act you are
about to perform is right, then it is sin to do it. This has zero reference to
the idea that everything a non-believer does is a sin even when its morally
good. That's not what Paul is talking about in context. He's talking about the
question of whether or not a Christian should eat something when they have
doubts as to whether it is a sin to do so.
Like,
if I wasn't sure if it was Ok to eat meat or not, and I eat it anyway, then it
would be a sin because I had a doubt. Even though eating meat is not actually a
sin under normal circumstances, if I thought there was a possibility that it
might be and did it anyway, then to me it would be a sin due to violating my
conscience.

John Burnett:
19 Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to
peace and to mutual edification. 20 Do not destroy the work of God for the sake of food. All food
is clean, but it is wrong for a person to eat anything that causes someone
else to stumble. 21 It is better not to eat meat or drink wine or to
do anything else that will cause your brother or sister to fall. We need to do all that we do with the intent of building up fellow
believers and maintaining our testimony where non-believers will at least
listen to what we have to say. Whether God opens their eyes and ears to
see and hear about their sin is up to Holy Spirit.
22 So whatever you believe about these things keep
between yourself and God. Blessed is the one who does not condemn himself
by what he approves. 23 But whoever has doubts is condemned if they
eat, because their eating is not from faith; and everything that does not come
from faith is sin. This last phrase about faith and sin sets a high
standard that I fall way short of. Thankfully my faith in Jesus Christ
and the Holy Spirit help me not sin as much as I used to. I am prone to
wander and my faith seldom manifests itself the way it should but God’s grace
always manifest itself the way it should. That is why it is so amazing
that while yet a sinner, Christ died for us. Thank you Lord Jesus for
your amazing grace shown to me and my family.

Allen Michaels: 19 Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to
mutual edification. 20 Do not destroy the work of God for the
sake of food. All food is clean, but it is wrong for a person to eat anything
that causes someone else to stumble. 21 It is better not to eat
meat or drink wine or to do anything else that will cause your brother or
sister to fall.
Sin
is not just a private matter. Everything we do affects others, and we have to
think of them constantly. God created us to be interdependent, not independent.
We who claim to be strong in our faith must, without pride or condescension,
treat others with love, patience, and self-restraint.
22 So whatever you
believe about these things keep between yourself and God. Blessed is the one
who does not condemn himself by what he approves. 23 But
whoever has doubts is condemned if they eat, because their eating is not from
faith; and everything that does not come from faith is sin. There are times when scripture is silent to us. Then we
should follow our consciences. “Everything that does not come from faith is
sin” means that to go against a conviction will leave a person with a guilty or
uneasy conscience. When God shows us that something is wrong for us, we should
avoid it. But we should not look down on other Christians who exercise their
freedom in those areas.

Tuesday’s reading for Romans 15:1-6, there is no reading Thursday, Friday or Monday.
15 We who are strong ought to bear with the
failings of the weak and not to please ourselves. 2 Each of us should please our neighbors for their
good, to build them up. 3 For even Christ did not please himself but, as it
is written: “The insults of those who insult you have fallen on me.”[a] 4 For everything that was written in the past was
written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and
the encouragement they provide we might have hope.
5 May the God who gives endurance
and encouragement give you the same attitude of mind toward each other that
Christ Jesus had, 6 so that
with one mind and one voice you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord
Jesus Christ.
