Luke 9:44-50

Rachel Workman: While everyone was marveling at all that Jesus did, he said to his disciples, 44 “Listen carefully to what I am about to tell you: The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men.” 45 But they did not understand what this meant. It was hidden from them, so that they did not grasp it, and they were afraid to ask him about it.
46 An argument started among the disciples as to which of them would be the greatest. 47 Jesus, knowing their thoughts, took a little child and had him stand beside him. 48 Then he said to them, “Whoever welcomes this little child in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. For it is the one who is least among you all who is the greatest.”
49 “Master,” said John, “we saw someone driving out demons in your name and we tried to stop him, because he is not one of us.”
50 “Do not stop him,” Jesus said, “for whoever is not against you is for you.” I love how simply Jesus put this. I have to believe that Jesus knew the root of the question which was probably jealousy. There is no room for that in the heart of a believer.

John Burnett:  44 “Listen carefully to what I am about to tell you: The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men.” 45 But they did not understand what this meant. It was hidden from them, so that they did not grasp it, and they were afraid to ask him about it.  The deliverance of the Jesus into the hands of men was part of the plan from the beginning.  If this plan was not put into place, we would all be doomed because of our sin and the wages that come with  it.
For it is the one who is least among you all who is the greatest.”  Since I have been named the Elementary Principal, these verses mean so much more to me.  Being a servant to children is a humbling but extremely rewarding experience.
49 “Master,” said John, “we saw someone driving out demons in your name and we tried to stop him, because he is not one of us.”
50 “Do not stop him,” Jesus said, “for whoever is not against you is for you.”  Jesus had not warned them about the end times and the false teachers and prophets yet or their confusion would be more understandable.  Only God knows a person’s heart and it was not their place to judge whether that guy was legitimate or not.

Mike Grimm:  While everyone was marveling at all that Jesus did, he said to his disciples, 44 “Listen carefully to what I am about to tell you: The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men.” 45 But they did not understand what this meant. It was hidden from them, so that they did not grasp it, and they were afraid to ask him about it.
46 An argument started among the disciples as to which of them would be the greatest. The disciples didn’t understand Jesus’ words about his death. They still thought of Jesus as only an earthly king, and they were concerned about their places in the kingdom he would setup. So they ignored Jesus’ words about his death and began arguing about who would be the greatest. 47 Jesus, knowing their thoughts, took a little child and had him stand beside him. 48 Then he said to them, “Whoever welcomes this little child in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. For it is the one who is least among you all who is the greatest.” Our care for others is a measure of our greatness. How much concern do we show to others? This is a vital question that can accurately measure our greatness in God’s eyes. How have we expressed our care for others lately, especially the helpless, the needy, the poor—those who can’t return our love and concern? Our honest answer to that question will give us a good idea of our real greatness.
49 “Master,” said John, “we saw someone driving out demons in your name and we tried to stop him, because he is not one of us.”
50 “Do not stop him,” Jesus said, “for whoever is not against you is for you.”
The disciples were jealous. Nine of them together were unable to drive out a single evil spirit, but when they saw a man who was not one of their group driving out demons, they told him to stop. Our pride is hurt when someone else succeeds where we have failed, but Jesus says there is no room for such jealousy in the spiritual warfare of his kingdom. We are required to share Jesus’ open-arms attitude to Christian workers outside our group.

Tomorrow’s reading for Luke 9:51-56

51 As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem. 52 And he sent messengers on ahead, who went into a Samaritan village to get things ready for him; 53 but the people there did not welcome him, because he was heading for Jerusalem. 54 When the disciples James and John saw this, they asked, “Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them[b]?” 55 But Jesus turned and rebuked them. 56 Then he and his disciples went to another village.
