Rachel Workman: 10 “Instead, take the lowest place at the foot of the table. Then when your host sees you, he will come and say, ‘Friend, we have a better place for you!’ Then you will be honored in front of all the other guests. 11 For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”
I like to think I am humble but the truth is I
lack a lot in the department of being humble. Christ was the perfect example of
being humble. I am the perfect example of why Christ needed to be humble. I am
imperfect but when Christ covers me, I am perfect in the eyes of the Lord.

John Burnett: 10 But when you are invited,
go and recline at the last place, so that when the one who has invited you
comes, he may say to you, ‘Friend, move up higher’; then you will have
honor in the sight of all who [a]are
at the table with you. 11 For everyone who exalts
himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.” The world likes to exalt
itself and those who think highly of themselves are what the bible calls
self-righteous. We cannot save ourselves; only the righteousness of
Christ, imputed to us when he humble ourselves, repent, and put our faith in
Him as our Savior, can save us.

Mike Grimm: 10 But when you are
invited, take the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he will say to
you, ‘Friend, move up to a better place.’ Then you will be honored in the
presence of all the other guests. 11 For all those
who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be
exalted.”
Here Jesus taught another lesson. He
told the Host not to be exclusive about whom he invites. God opens his kingdom
to everyone.
How can we humble ourselves?
Some people try to give the appearance of humility in order to manipulate
others. Others think that humility means putting themselves down. Truly humble
people compare themselves only with Christ, realize their sinfulness, and
understand their limitations. On the other hand, they also recognize their
gifts and strengths and are willing to use them as Christ directs. Humility is
not self-degradation; it is realistic assessment and commitment to serve.

Tomorrow’s reading for Luke 14:12-14
12 Then he turned to his host. “When you
put on a luncheon or a banquet,” he said, “don’t invite your friends, brothers,
relatives, and rich neighbors. For they will invite you back, and that will be
your only reward. 13 Instead, invite the poor, the crippled,
the lame, and the blind. 14 Then at the resurrection of the righteous,
God will reward you for inviting those who could not repay you.”
