John Burnett: In the year that King
Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; and
the train[a] of his robe filled the
temple. 2 Above him stood the seraphim. Each
had six wings: with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his
feet, and with two he flew. 3 And one called to
another and said: Isaiah was allowed to see the Lord sitting on His Throne and two
seraphim above Him declaring the glory of the Lord. The really awesome
thing about being born again and adopted as sons and daughters of God the
Father is that we will have authority over the seraphim as we are co-heirs and
rulers with Christ in His heavenly kingdom.
“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of
hosts;
the whole earth is full of his glory!”[b]
the whole earth is full of his glory!”[b]
4 And the foundations of the thresholds shook at
the voice of him who called, and the house was filled with smoke. 5 And
I said: “Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips,
and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen
the King, the Lord of
hosts!” The
appropriate response when in the presence of the King of kings and Lord of
lords. It is also the appropriate response when the Holy Spirit opens the
eyes of a wretched sinner so that he or she can see their sin and repent like
Isaiah is doing here.
6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his
hand a burning coal that he had taken with tongs from the altar.

Tomorrow’s reading for Isaiah
6:8-13
8 Then I heard the Lord asking,
“Whom should I send as a messenger to this people? Who will go for us?”
I said, “Here I am. Send me.”
9 And he said, “Yes, go, and say to
this people,
‘Listen carefully, but do not
understand.
Watch closely, but learn nothing.’
10 Harden the hearts of these people.
Plug their ears and shut their eyes.
That way, they will not see with their eyes,
nor hear with their ears,
nor understand with their hearts
and turn to me for healing.”[b]

10 Harden the hearts of these people.
Plug their ears and shut their eyes.
That way, they will not see with their eyes,

nor understand with their hearts
and turn to me for healing.”[b]
11 Then I said, “Lord, how long will
this go on?”
And he replied,
“Until their towns are empty, their houses are deserted,
and the whole country is a wasteland;
12 until the Lord has sent everyone away,
and the entire land of Israel lies deserted.
13 If even a tenth—a remnant—survive,
it will be invaded again and burned.
But as a terebinth or oak tree leaves a stump when it is cut down,
so Israel’s stump will be a holy seed.”
