Rachel Workman: 36 “So let everyone in Israel know for certain that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, to be both Lord and Messiah!”
37 Peter’s
words pierced their hearts, and they said to him and to the other apostles,
“Brothers, what should we do?”
38 Peter replied, “Each of you must repent of your sins and turn to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 This promise is to you, to your children, and to those far away[h]—all who have been called by the Lord our God.” 40 Then Peter continued preaching for a long time, strongly urging all his listeners, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation!”
41 Those who believed what Peter said were baptized and added to the church that day—about 3,000 in all.
This
suggests that people must be baptized in order to be saved, but this is
not what
the Bible teaches. The Greek word eis (which is translated “for” in the phrase
“for the remission of sins”) can mean “on account of or “on the basis of.” In
Matthew 3:11, John the Baptist baptized on the basis that people had repented.
Acts 2:38 should not be used to teach salvation by baptism. If baptism is
essential for salvation, it seems strange that Peter said nothing about baptism
in his other sermons (Acts 3:12–26; 5:29–32; 10:34–43). In fact, the people in
the home of Cornelius received the Holy Spirit before they were baptized (Acts
10:44–48)! Since believers are commanded to be baptized, it is important that
we have a clean conscience by obeying (1 Peter 3:21), but we must not think
that baptism is a part of salvation.

John Burnett: 36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know for certain that God has made Him both Lord and Christ—this Jesus whom you crucified.”
37 Now when they heard this, they were pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what are we to do?” This is how we should feel about our sin. Our Sin hurts us because it grieves the Holy Spirit. 38 Peter said to them, “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Repent not only means to feel bad about our sin, but daily fight against our sin. We are in a fight and that is why Paul talks about putting on the full armor of God. When our eyes are opened by the Holy Spirit, the gift of repentance and saving faith is given to us. 39 For the promise is for you and your children and for all who are far away, as many as the Lord our God will call to Himself.” 40 And with many other words he solemnly testified and kept on urging them, saying, “Be saved from this perverse generation!” This is just as applicable today. 41 So then, those who had received his word were baptized; and that day there were added about three thousand souls.

Tomorrow’s reading for Acts 2:42-47
42 All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper[i]), and to prayer.
43 A deep sense of awe came over them all, and the apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders. 44 And all the believers met together in one place and shared everything they had. 45 They sold their property and possessions and shared the money with those in need. 46 They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord’s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity[j]— 47 all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people. And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved.
