Rachel Workman: 26 In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a village in Galilee, 27 to a virgin named Mary. She was engaged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of King David. 28 Gabriel appeared to her and said, “Greetings, favored woman! The Lord is with you!” I love this an angel, Gabriel no less was telling Mary she was a favored woman. And indeed she was.
29 Confused and disturbed, Mary tried to think what the angel could mean. I can imagine her thinking this. We are favored because we are children of God. But if an angel appeared to me and said Greetings favored woman would I ponder in the same way? I would guess yes I would. 30 “Don’t be afraid, Mary,” the angel told her, “for you have found favor with God! 31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus. 32 He will be very great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David. 33 And he will reign over Israel[e] forever; his Kingdom will never end!”
34 Mary asked the angel, “But how can this happen? I am a virgin.”
35 The angel replied, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the baby to be born will be holy, and he will be called the Son of God. 36 What’s more, your relative Elizabeth has become pregnant in her old age! People used to say she was barren, but she has conceived a son and is now in her sixth month. 37 For nothing is impossible with God.” Amen, and I need to remember this. When I hit a wall, I need to remember nothing is impossible with God.
38 Mary responded, “I am the Lord’s servant. May everything you have said about me come true.” And then the angel left her. I would like to think that I would respond in the same way to God no matter what it was he was asking of me. However, I know first hand I haven't always responded well to the things God has asked me to do.

Burnett: 26 Now in the sixth month the angel
Gabriel was sent from God to a city in Galilee called Nazareth, 27 to
a virgin [a]engaged to a man whose name
was Joseph, of the [b]descendants of David; and
the virgin’s name was [c]Mary. 28 And
coming in, he said to her, “Greetings, [d]favored one! The Lord [e]is with you.” 29 But
she was very perplexed at this statement, and kept pondering what kind
of salutation this was. 30 The angel said to her, “Do not be
afraid, Mary; for you have found favor with God. 31 And behold,
you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name Him Jesus. 32 He
will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God
will give Him the throne of His father David; 33 and He will
reign over the house of Jacob forever, and His kingdom will have no end.” 34 Mary
said to the angel, “How [f]can this be, since I [g]am a virgin?” I
don’t detect doubt in her statement like you could from Zacharias’s
questioning.35 The angel answered and said to her, “The
Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow
you; and for that reason the [h]holy Child shall be called
the Son of God. 36 And behold, even your relative Elizabeth has
also conceived a son in her old age; and [i]she who was called barren is
now in her sixth month. 37 For [j]nothing will be impossible
with God.” Isn’t this such wonderful promise. Because it is
true, everything He promises will be fulfilled. 38 And
Mary said, “Behold, the [k]bondslave of the Lord; may
it be done to me according to your word.” The term slave has such a
negative connotation in the world’s eyes. To be a slave to Jesus Christ
means that we belong to him and no one will snatch us from his hand. And
the angel departed from her.
Jesus’s birth was important only in
that it was a necessary part of the plan in order for Him to die as the final
sacrifice for the sins of the world. I know how many sins I have
committed and the punishment I deserve and he will willingly stepped down off
of his throne to come and take that punishment for me. What an amazing Savior.

27 to a virgin named Mary. She was engaged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of King David. 28 Gabriel appeared to her and said, “Greetings, favored woman! The Lord is with you![d]”
- to a very unlikely young woman
29 Confused and disturbed, Mary tried to think what the angel could mean. - and she seemed to think so, too
30 “Don’t be afraid, Mary,” the angel told her, “for you have found favor with God! -what a great thing to be said of her! I pray that I find favor in His eyes, too.
31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus. 32 He will be very great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David. 33 And he will reign over Israel[e] forever; his Kingdom will never end!” - what a lot to take in! Can you imagine how her head must have been spinning?
34 Mary asked the angel, “But how can this happen? I am a virgin.”
35 The angel replied, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. One that we would do well to remember today.
38 Mary responded, “I am the Lord’s servant. - how do you respond to Him?
May everything you have said about me come true.” And then the angel left her.

asked the angel, “But how can this happen? I am a virgin.” Her question, “But how can this happen? I am a virgin.” is not
prompted by doubt or skepticism, but by wonderment! She is a true hearer of the
Word and she immediately responds with faith and trust.
35 The angel replied, “The Holy Spirit will come upon
you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the baby to be born
will be holy, and he will be called the Son of God. We have here an account of the mother of our
Lord; though we are not to pray to her, we need to praise God for her. Christ
must be born miraculously. 36 What’s more, your
relative Elizabeth has become pregnant in her old age! People used to say she
was barren, but she has conceived a son and is now in her sixth month. 37 For
nothing is impossible with God.”
38 Mary responded, “I am the Lord’s servant. May
everything you have said about me come true.” And then the angel left her. Mary's reply to
the angel was the language of faith and humble admiration, and she asked no
sign for the confirming her faith. The angel states the basic premise "Nothing is impossible
with God." Mary simply responds in humble acceptance, "I am the
Lord's servant. May everything you have said about me come true.”
We have here an
account of the mother of our Lord; though we are not to pray to her, we need to
praise God for her. Christ must be born miraculously.
