Rachel Workman: 13
So think clearly and exercise self-control. Look forward to the gracious
salvation that will come to you when Jesus Christ is revealed to the world. 14
So you must live as God’s obedient children. Don’t slip back into your old ways
of living to satisfy your own desires. You didn’t know any better then. 15 But
now you must be holy in everything you do, just as God who chose you is holy.
16 For the Scriptures say, “You must be holy because I am holy.” Father, thank you for making your mercies new every day. I know I fail you in this
quite often.
17 And remember that the heavenly Father to whom you pray has no favorites. He will judge or reward you according to what you do. So you must live in reverent fear of him during your time as “foreigners in the land.” 18 For you know that God paid a ransom to save you from the empty life you inherited from your ancestors. And the ransom he paid was not mere gold or silver. 19 It was the precious blood of Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God. 20 God chose him as your ransom long before the world began, but he has now revealed him to you in these last days. This is an important reason why I should strive to be holy. God the Father, is also a judge, more importantly, my judge. There is a judgment after death, which is sure and certain, and reaches to everyone. Now God has committed all judgment to the Son, whom he has ordained to be the Judge. We must all stand before his judgment seat, where we will be impartially tried. It will not matter what nation or whether Jews or Gentiles. Small and great will stand before him, rich or poor, high or low, religious sect and denomination will not matter. We will not be judged according to what others see or say about us. Jesus will look at the heart and knows the secrets of all of our actions; and according to that he will judge and pass the sentence. I for one am so grateful that Jesus will be there to declare me as righteous. Without Christ there is nothing righteous inside of me. I am an undeserving sinner covered by the blood of Christ. A simple thanks is less than Christ deserves. He deserves my devotion, and praise.
21 Through Christ you have come to trust in God. And you have placed your faith and hope in God because he raised Christ from the dead and gave him great glory. We can put our trust in God because he provided a way for us to overcome death. There is nothing that we could ever do to be worthy of it.
22 You were cleansed from your sins when you obeyed the truth, so now you must show sincere love to each other as brothers and sisters. Love each other deeply with all your heart. I know I fail in this area also. I need to love at all times even when I am not being extended love.
23 For you have been born again, but not to a life that will quickly end. Your new life will last forever because it comes from the eternal, living word of God. 24 As the Scriptures say, I read this verse several times. I read a few commentaries also. There are several different views on what the living word of God references here. I believe it references just what it says, the living word of God. In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. John 1:1. Jesus is the Word that became flesh for us. What have we done to deserve that?
“People are like grass;
their beauty is like a flower in the field.
The grass withers and the flower fades.
25 But the word of the Lord remains forever.”
And that word is the Good News that was preached to you.
17 And remember that the heavenly Father to whom you pray has no favorites. He will judge or reward you according to what you do. John Burnett: 13 Therefore,
[a]prepare your minds for
action, [b]keep sober in spirit,
fix your hope completely on the grace [c]to be brought to you at the
revelation of Jesus Christ. 14 As [d]obedient children, do not [e]be conformed to the former
lusts which were yours in your ignorance, 15 but [f]like the Holy One who called
you, [g]be holy yourselves also in
all your behavior; 16 because it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”
I am going to have to wear my steel toe boots to read these books.
“Fix our hope on the grace to be brought to you…” is a beautiful command.
I am so thankful that he chose to show me and my family grace even when we all
fall so short of Holy. Holy means to set apart and we will be set apart
from the world when Christ returns. Until then, because he is Holy and we
are imputed his righteousness, God sees us as Holy because when He looks at us,
He sees Jesus.
17 If
you address as Father the One who impartially judges according to each one’s
work, conduct yourselves in fear during the time of your stay on earth; 18 knowing
that you were not [h]redeemed with perishable
things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your
forefathers, We are saved by grace and not by works. 19 but
with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of
Christ. 20 For He was foreknown before the foundation of the
world, but has appeared [i]in these last times for the
sake of you 21 who through Him are believers in God, who raised
Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.
22 Since
you have in obedience to the truth purified your souls for a [j]sincere love of the
brethren, fervently love one another from [k]the heart, 23 for
you have been born again not of seed which is perishable but imperishable, that
is, through the living and enduring word of God. 24 For, John
1:1-5 is in play here. Jesus =Word.
“All flesh is like grass,
And all its glory like the flower of grass.
The grass withers,
And the flower falls off,
25 But the word of the Lord endures forever.”
And all its glory like the flower of grass.
The grass withers,
And the flower falls off,
25 But the word of the Lord endures forever.”
And
this is the word which was [l]preached to you.
Have
a great three day weekend.

Mike Grimm: 13 So think
clearly and exercise self-control. Look forward to the gracious salvation that
will come to you when Jesus Christ is revealed to the world. 14 So
you must live as God’s obedient children. Don’t slip back into your old ways of
living to satisfy your own desires. You didn’t know any better then. 15 But
now you must be holy in everything you do, just as God who chose you is holy. 16 For
the Scriptures say, “You must be holy because I am holy.” In verses 13-16, Peter makes it very clear on how God
wants us to behave. We must commit ourselves to following Christ…full time. Not
on Sundays or when we are hurting or desire something, but all the time.
Children
often look like their parents and behave like them. Christians are now children
of God, because God is their Father in heaven. God is holy. God wants his
children to be like him. They must have his character in their lives. To be
holy means to be completely separate from all sin and evil. It also means to
belong to God alone. God commands Christians to be holy. The Holy Spirit makes
them holy (verse 2). This does not mean that Christians can live their lives
completely without sin. This will only happen in heaven. But with God’s help
they must now try hard to avoid all sin and evil in every part of their lives.
Many times
in this letter, Peter tells his readers what the Bible says. These verses are
from the Old Testament. Men wrote down all of the Old Testament before the
birth of Jesus. Like all Jewish boys, Peter had to learn and remember many Old
Testament verses. This command to be holy is very important. God says it five
times in the book of Leviticus (see 11:44; 11:45; 19:2; 20:7; 20:26).
17 And remember that the heavenly Father to whom
you pray has no favorites. He will judge or reward you according to what you
do. So you must live in reverent fear of him during your time as “foreigners in
the land.” Christians
can pray to God as their Father. But he does not deal with other people in a
different way. He does not judge people by what their faces look like. Instead,
God judges all people by his standard of what is good and evil. God sees how
every person lives. To fear God does not mean to be afraid of him. It means
that Christians should respect and obey God because he is great and holy. Peter
again reminds Christians that they are strangers in this world. Their true home
is in heaven. 18 For you know that God paid a ransom to save
you from the empty life you inherited from your ancestors. And the ransom he
paid was not mere gold or silver. 19 It was the precious blood
of Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God. 20 God chose him
as your ransom long before the world began, but he has now revealed him to you
in these last days. People choose to do what is evil. Before God made the
world, he knew that this would happen. So he made the plan of how Christ would
save people from their evil lives. God ‘chose’ Christ. The word ‘chose’ is the
same word as in verse 2. ‘In these last days’ refers to the time since Christ
came to earth. We live in the last days now.
21 Through Christ you have come to trust in God.
And you have placed your faith and hope in God because he raised Christ from
the dead and gave him great glory. Jesus says that the only way that a person can come to
God the Father is through Jesus Christ his Son (John 14:6). People of many
different religions say that they believe in God. If they do not believe in
Jesus, then they are not Christians. They do not have *eternal life with God.
Jesus rose from death and came alive again. Later, he returned to heaven and
received glory from God (Philippians 2:6-11; Ephesians 1:20-21). Christians
have a sure hope in God because they know that he always keeps his promises.
22 You were cleansed from your sins when you
obeyed the truth, so now you must show sincere love to each other as brothers
and sisters. Love each other deeply with all your heart. Every day,
Christians must obey the truth. This will make their life pure. Psalm 119:9
says, ‘How can a young man live a pure life? When he lives the way that God’s
word tells us’. The Bible is God’s word. The Bible is truth.
As
Christians become purer in their lives, they will have a deeper love for each
other. They will not have evil thoughts and feelings about other Christians. To
have sincere love means they really care about other people. They mean what
they say. People are not sincere when they just pretend to love other people.
23 For you have been born again, but not to a
life that will quickly end. Your new life will last forever because it comes
from the eternal, living word of God. 24 As the Scriptures say,
“People are like
grass;
their beauty is like a flower in the field.
The grass withers and the flower fades.
25 But the word of the Lord remains forever.”
their beauty is like a flower in the field.
The grass withers and the flower fades.
25 But the word of the Lord remains forever.”
The ‘word of
the Lord’ (God) can refer to the Bible. It also means the good news that God
saves people from sin through Jesus Christ. When people hear or read this good
news, it is like a seed that God plants in their lives. Seeds grow into plants.
However, plants die. But the seed of God’s word will never die. It gives a
person new birth into God’s family.
