Rachel Workman: 35 The following day John was again
standing with two of his disciples. 36 As Jesus walked by, John looked at him
and declared, “Look! There is the Lamb of God!” 37 When John’s two disciples
heard this, they followed Jesus.
38 Jesus looked around and saw them following. “What do you want?” he asked them.
They replied, “Rabbi” (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying?”
39 “Come and see,” he said. It was about four o’clock in the afternoon when they went with him to the place where he was staying, and they remained with him the rest of the day.
40 Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of these men who heard what John said and then followed Jesus. 41 Andrew went to find his brother, Simon, and told him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means “Christ”[m]).
42 Then Andrew brought Simon to meet Jesus. Looking intently at Simon, Jesus said, “Your name is Simon, son of John—but you will be called Cephas” (which means “Peter”[n]).
43 The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Come, follow me.” 44 Philip was from Bethsaida, Andrew and Peter’s hometown.
45 Philip went to look for Nathanael and told him, “We have found the very person Moses[o] and the prophets wrote about! His name is Jesus, the son of Joseph from Nazareth.” To read this it's easy to think wow that's it? Someone says hey I found the Messiah and here he is and everyone just believes them. As we've already read the Holy Spirit is very much active. I think it's like reading God's word. You're heart just says yes and you know because the Holy Spirit is active and working.
46 “Nazareth!” exclaimed Nathanael. “Can anything good come from Nazareth?”
“Come and see for yourself,” Philip replied.
47 As they approached, Jesus said, “Now here is a genuine son of Israel—a man of complete integrity.” Wow to have Jesus say this about you. The one who knows your heart better than anyone else.
48 “How do you know about me?” Nathanael asked.
Jesus replied, “I could see you under the fig tree before Philip found you.”
49 Then Nathanael exclaimed, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God—the King of Israel!”
50 Jesus asked him, “Do you believe this just because I told you I had seen you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than this.” 51 Then he said, “I tell you the truth, you will all see heaven open and the angels of God going up and down on the Son of Man, the one who is the stairway between heaven and earth.” I love this verse. Jesus the one who is he stairway between heaven and earth.

John Burnett: 35 Again
the next day John was standing [a]with two of his disciples, 36 and
he looked at Jesus as He walked, and *said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!” 37 The
two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus. 38 And
Jesus turned and saw them following, and *said to them, “What do you seek?”
They said to Him, “Rabbi (which translated means Teacher), where are You
staying?” 39 He *said to them, “Come, and you will see.” So
they came and saw where He was staying; and they stayed with Him that day, for
it was about the [b]tenth hour. 40 One
of the two who heard John speak and followed Him, was Andrew, Simon
Peter’s brother. 41 He *found first his own brother Simon and
*said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which translated means [c]Christ). 42 He
brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of [d]John; you shall be called
Cephas” (which is translated [e]Peter). One could
read this and be surprised at how easy it was for Jesus to call Andrew and
Peter to discipleship. The plan since before the universe was created was
for these two men to be the first disciples and for the church to be started by
Peter. They had been watching for the Messiah just as we should be
watching for Christ’s return.
43 The
next day He purposed to go into Galilee, and He *found Philip. And Jesus *said
to him, “Follow Me.” 44 Now Philip was from Bethsaida, of the
city of Andrew and Peter. 45 Philip *found Nathanael and *said
to him, “We have found Him of whom Moses in the Law and also the
Prophets wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” 46 Nathanael
said to him, “Can any good thing come out of Nazareth?” Philip *said to him,
“Come and see.” 47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming to Him, and *said
of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit!” 48 Nathanael
*said to Him, “How do You know me?” Jesus answered and said to him, “Before
Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” 49 Nathanael
answered Him, “Rabbi, You are the Son of God; You are the King of Israel.” 50 Jesus
answered and said to him, “Because I said to you that I saw you under the fig
tree, do you believe? You will see greater things than these.” 51 And
He *said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see the heavens opened
and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.” Andrew
and Nathanael are very seldom mentioned in the Gospels and Philip had a larger
teaching roll later on in Acts. They all three recognized that Jesus
Christ was the Messiah almost immediately. Their eyes were opened and
they were able to see that Jesus was the Christ. Many saw him do many
miracles and never recognized that he was the Son of God. This makes a
good argument for predestination/election.
