Matthew 6:24-27

Rachel Workman: 24 “No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.

25 “That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life—whether you have enough food and drink, or enough clothes to wear. Isn’t life more than food, and your body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to him than they are? 27 Can all your worries add a single moment to your life?
These verses have always weighed heavy on me. You can't serve two masters. Money isn't the only thing that can be a master. What about fear? What about porn or any sin in general. We will love one and hate the other. You'll hate God for telling you what you're doing is wrong. But you'll still serve the other master.
Verse 25-27 are verses you need to commit to memory. Knowing what I know, why do I worry?

John Burnett:  24 “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and [a]wealth.  I read an article about the CFO of TBN suing TBN over wrongful termination because she would not distribute 100 million dollars of donations to the other executives (family members of the founders of TBN).  One part of the article talked about his and her matching mansions across the street from each other in California.  They had the same thing in Florida across the road from the TBN theme park.  The lawsuit claimed she was threatened with a gun during one meeting.  She was also a family member of the founders.  This verse alone debunks the health and wealth doctrine being taught on TV and megachurches.
The Cure for Anxiety
25 “For this reason I say to you, [b]do not be worried about your [c]life, as to what you will eat or what you will drink; nor for your body, as to what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds of the [d]air, that they do not sow, nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they? 27 And who of you by being worried can add a single [e]hour to his [f]life?  I had a wise administrator tell me one time, “Don’t sweat the small stuff, and all stuff is small stuff.”  This is especially true for the God we worship yet we worry about this world and most of the things in it.  I understand the world worrying because they have no hope but those of us who belong to Christ Jesus have nothing to worry about.

Allen Michaels:  24 “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money. Jesus says we can only have one master. We live in a materialistic society where many people serve money. They spend all their lives collecting and storing it, only to die and leave it behind. Their desire for money and what it can buy far outweighs their commitment to God and spiritual matters. Whatever you store up, you will spend much of your time and energy thinking about it. Don’t fall into the materialistic trap, because “the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil” (1 Timothy 6:10). Can you honestly say that God, and not money, is your master? One test is to ask which one occupies more of your thoughts, time, and efforts.

Jesus contrasted heavenly values with earthly values when he explained that out first loyalty should be to those things that do not fade, cannot be stolen or used up, and never wear out. We should not be fascinated with out possessions, lest they possess us. This means we may have to do some cutting back if our possessions are becoming too important to us. Jesus is calling for a decision that allows us to live contentedly with whatever we have because we have chosen what is eternal and lasting.

Do Not Worry

25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Because of the ill effects of worry, Jesus tells us not to worry about those needs that God promises to supply. Worry may (1) damage your health, (2) cause the object of your worry to consume your thoughts, (3) disrupt your productivity, (4) negatively affect the way you treat others, and (5) reduce your ability to trust in God. How many ill effects of worry are you experiencing? Here is the difference between worry and genuine concern—worry immobilizes, but concern moves us to action.  26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?
