Rachel Workman:
11 He told them,
“The secret of the kingdom of God has been given to you. But to those on the
outside everything is said in parables 12 so that,
“‘they may be ever seeing but
never perceiving,and ever hearing but never understanding;
otherwise they might turn and be forgiven!’[a]”
13 Then Jesus said to them, “Don’t you understand this parable? How then will you understand any parable? 14 The farmer sows the word. 15 Some people are like seed along the path, where the word is sown. As soon as they hear it, Satan comes and takes away the word that was sown in them. 16 Others, like seed sown on rocky places, hear the word and at once receive it with joy. 17 But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away. 18 Still others, like seed sown among thorns, hear the word; 19 but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth and the desires for other things come in and choke the word, making it unfruitful. 20 Others, like seed sown on good soil, hear the word, accept it, and produce a crop—some thirty, some sixty, some a hundred times what was sown.”
I've always loved these verses. God's word is so important that God went through great lengths for us to have it. When we buy something new we read the manual so that we will know how to use it to its fullest capacity. But God's word is neglected and deemed old fashion and not applicable to our lives now. Yet in the verses above it states that Jesus spoke in parables that “‘they may be ever seeing but never perceiving, and ever hearing but never understanding; otherwise they might turn and be forgiven! Jesus isn't saying we can't or won't be forgiven but we can't or won't be forgiven until we are understanding of the word of God. We will never fully understand and we'll never stop learning. But that doesn't mean we're exempt from seeking it.

John Burnett:
11 And
He was saying to them, “To you has been given the mystery of the kingdom
of God, but those who are outside get everything in parables, 12 so that while seeing, they may see and not perceive,
and while hearing, they may hear and not understand, otherwise they might
return and be forgiven.”
Explanation
13 And
He *said to them, “Do you not understand this parable? How will you
understand all the parables? 14 The
sower sows the word. 15 These
are the ones who are beside the road where the word is sown; and when they
hear, immediately Satan comes and takes away the word which has been sown
in them. 16 In
a similar way these are the ones on whom seed was sown on the rocky places,
who, when they hear the word, immediately receive it with joy;17 and they have no firm root
in themselves, but are only temporary; then, when affliction
or persecution arises because of the word, immediately they[a]fall
away. 18 And
others are the ones on whom seed was sown among the thorns; these are the ones
who have heard the word, 19 but
the worries of the[b]world,
and the deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for other things enter in
and choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful. 20 And those are the ones on whom
seed was sown on the good soil; and they hear the word and accept it
and bear fruit, thirty, sixty, and a hundredfold.”
Four
distinct groups of people are described in this passage. Those who are
controlled by their sin and Satan and none of the word grows in them. The
church is filled with the seed sown on rocky places and the Bible talks about a
great falling away in the end times when persecution arises. The thorns
represent those who are too busy making money to give the Word the reverence it
is due. Then there is the seed that is sown on good soil that hears the
Word and accepts the Word and bears fruit. This is the narrow way and few
enter through this gate. I praise God that He has called me to be good
soil.

Tomorrow's reading for Mark 4:21-25
21 He
said to them, “Do you bring in a lamp to put it under a bowl or a bed? Instead,
don’t you put it on its stand? 22 For whatever is hidden is
meant to be disclosed, and whatever is concealed is meant to be brought out
into the open. 23 If anyone has ears to hear, let them hear.”
24 “Consider
carefully what you hear,” he continued. “With the measure you use, it will be
measured to you—and even more. 25 Whoever has will be given
more; whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them.”
