Rachel
Workman: 38 After leaving the synagogue that
day, Jesus went to Simon’s home, where he found Simon’s mother-in-law very sick
with a high fever. “Please heal her,” everyone begged. 39 Standing
at her bedside, he rebuked the fever, and it left her. And she got up at once
and prepared a meal for them. I've said it before and I'll say it again.
When Jesus heals you he doesn't just heal you he restores you. The fact that
she got up and prepared a meal tells me she wasn't even weak from the illness.
40 As the
sun went down that evening, people throughout the village brought sick family
members to Jesus. No matter what their diseases were, the touch of his hand
healed every one. 41 Many were possessed by demons; and the
demons came out at his command, shouting, “You are the Son of God!” But because
they knew he was the Messiah, he rebuked them and refused to let them speak.

John Burnett:
38 Jesus left the synagogue and went to the home of Simon. Now Simon’s
mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Jesus to help
her. 39 So he bent over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her.
She got up at once and began to wait on them.
40 At sunset, the people brought to Jesus all who
had various kinds of sickness, and laying his hands on each one, he healed
them.41 Moreover, demons came out of many people, shouting, “You are the
Son of God!” But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak,
because they knew he was the Messiah. Jesus healing the sick gave him credibility.
He came to heal our most serious illness whose consequence is always
death. That illness is sin. Even the demons know that he is the Son
of God but they choose to be evil anyway.

Commentary:
Simon's
wife's mother - See on Matthew
8:14-17 (note). As soon as Peter began to follow Christ, his family began
to benefit by it. It is always profitable to contract an acquaintance with good
men. One person full of faith and prayer may be the means of drawing down
innumerable blessings on his family and acquaintance. Every person who knows
the virtue and authority of Christ should earnestly seek his grace in behalf of
all the spiritually diseased in his household; nor can he seek the aid of
Christ in vain.

Tomorrow’s reading for Luke 4:42-44.
42 Early the next morning Jesus went out to an isolated place. The
crowds searched everywhere for him, and when they finally found him, they
begged him not to leave them. 43 But he replied, “I must preach the Good News of the Kingdom
of God in other towns, too, because that is why I was sent.” 44 So he continued to travel
around, preaching in synagogues throughout Judea.[h]
