I would say the son had hit the lowest point
of his life. Maybe the son had not been made to work hard enough. This isn't
uncommon to see in children whose parents have given them too much.

Mike Grimm: 13 “Not long after that, the
younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there
squandered his wealth in wild living.14 After he
had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that whole country, and he
began to be in need. 15 So he went and hired
himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed
pigs. 16 He longed to fill his stomach with the
pods that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything.
A Jew would not even touch a pig as
they were considered unclean animals. So for a Jew to stoop to feeding pigs was
a great humiliation, and for this young man to eat food that the pigs had
touched was to be degraded beyond belief. The younger son had truly hit rock
bottom.

Tomorrow’s reading for Luke 15:17-19
17 “When he finally came to his senses,
he said to himself, ‘At home even the hired servants have food enough to spare,
and here I am dying of hunger! 18 I will go home to my father
and say, “Father, I have sinned against both heaven and you, 19 and
I am no longer worthy of being called your son. Please take me on as a hired
servant.”’
