Rachel Workman: 20 “So he returned home to his father. And while he was still a long way off, his father saw him coming. Filled with love and compassion, he ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him. 21 His son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against both heaven and you, and I am no longer worthy of being called your son.[b]’
This father is a lot like the heavenly father. We've all sinned against our father. Yet he runs to us and he embraces us. How great is our God?

John Burnett: 20 So he got up and came
to [a]his father. But while he was
still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion for him,
and ran and [b]embraced him and kissed him. 21 And
the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight; I
am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ The same could be said for
our relationship with our Heavenly Father. We are not worthy to be called
His sons and daughters because of our sin but by His grace we are adopted
co-heirs with Christ when we repent of our sins and put our trust in Jesus
Christ as our Savior.

Mike
Grimm: In the two preceding
parables, the seeker actively looked for the coin and the sheep, which could
not return by themselves. In this parable, the father watched and waited. He
was dealing with a human being with a will of his own, be he was ready to greet
his son if he returned. In the same way, God’s love is constant and patient and
welcoming. He will search for us and give us opportunities to respond, but He
will not force us to come to Him. Like the father in this parable, God waits
patiently for us to come to our senses.
20 So he got up and went to his father.
“But while he was still a
long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran
to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him. God did not save him because he repented, nor because he
walked all the way back home, but for one reason. He forgave him because he was
his son! We are saved by grace, and we should never forget it!
21 “The son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against
heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ The son shows a manly spirit in adhering to his purpose
to make a confession, notwithstanding the warmth of his father's welcome; in
grieving for what he had done, and not for what he had lost; and in blaming no
one but himself.

Tomorrow’s reading for Luke 15:22-24
22 “But his father said to the servants,
‘Quick! Bring the finest robe in the house and put it on him. Get a ring for
his finger and sandals for his feet. 23 And kill the calf we
have been fattening. We must celebrate with a feast, 24 for
this son of mine was dead and has now returned to life. He was lost, but now he
is found.’ So the party began.
