Rachel Workman: 22 “Finally, the poor man died and was carried by the angels to sit beside Abraham at the heavenly banquet.[e] The rich man also died and was buried, 23 and he went to the place of the dead.[f] There, in torment, he saw Abraham in the far distance with Lazarus at his side.
24 “The
rich man shouted, ‘Father Abraham, have some pity! Send Lazarus over here to
dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue. I am in anguish in these
flames.’
Funny how quickly things can change. May I never find myself in this man's shoes.

John Burnett: 19 “Now there was a rich man,
and he habitually dressed in purple and fine linen, joyously living in splendor
every day. 20 And a poor man named Lazarus was
laid at his gate, covered with sores, 21 and
longing to be fed with the crumbs which were falling from the
rich man’s table; besides, even the dogs were coming and licking his
sores. 22 Now the poor man died and was carried
away by the angels to Abraham’s bosom; and the rich man also died and was
buried. 23 In Hades he lifted up his eyes,
being in torment, and *saw Abraham far away and Lazarus in his bosom. 24 And
he cried out and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus so
that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool off my tongue, for I am
in agony in this flame.’ It is pretty clear that
depending on your wealth is not a good idea. The meek shall inherit the
earth and the rich man is now begging for relief from the poor man. I am
curious if the ability of the rich man to see Lazarus is something all those
who die and go to Hades will have. The torment of being able to see what
could have been would be on another level.

Tomorrow’s reading for Luke 16:25-28
25 “But Abraham said to him, ‘Son,
remember that during your lifetime you had everything you wanted, and Lazarus
had nothing. So now he is here being comforted, and you are in anguish. 26 And
besides, there is a great chasm separating us. No one can cross over to you
from here, and no one can cross over to us from there.’
27 “Then the rich man said, ‘Please,
Father Abraham, at least send him to my father’s home. 28 For I
have five brothers, and I want him to warn them so they don’t end up in this
place of torment.’
