Luke 16:25-28

Rachel Workman: 25 “But Abraham said to him, ‘Son, remember that during your lifetime you had everything you wanted, and Lazarus had nothing. So now he is here being comforted, and you are in anguish. 26 And besides, there is a great chasm separating us. No one can cross over to you from here, and no one can cross over to us from there.’ I can't imagine being in hell and being able to see the heaven you wish you had chosen.

27 “Then the rich man said, ‘Please, Father Abraham, at least send him to my father’s home. 28 For I have five brothers, and I want him to warn them so they don’t end up in this place of torment.’

John Burnett:  25 But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember that during your life you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus bad things; but now he is being comforted here, and you are in agony. 26 And [a]besides all this, between us and you there is a great chasm fixed, so that those who wish to come over from here to you will not be able, and that none may cross over from there to us.’ 27 And he said, ‘Then I beg you, father, that you send him to my father’s house— 28 for I have five brothers—in order that he may warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’  The rich man trusted his riches but now he knows the truth and wants to warn his brothers.  If you do not listen to the Holy Spirit when he is drawing you to Jesus Christ, there are no second chances once you have passed away.  Jesus is not a get out of hell free card that you get from luck like on a monopoly game.  When the Holy Spirit calls and you ignore it like the rich man in this story, and you pass away like the rich man, there are irreconcilable sin issues that condemn you to the place of torment (HELL).  This is why Christ died.  He is one who took this punishment for us on the cross and if we turn from our sin and put our trust in His death and resurrection we are spared the punishment of hell that we deserve but we are also given the gift of being rewarded in Heaven.

Tomorrow’s reading for Luke 16:29-31

29 “But Abraham said, ‘Moses and the prophets have warned them. Your brothers can read what they wrote.’
30 “The rich man replied, ‘No, Father Abraham! But if someone is sent to them from the dead, then they will repent of their sins and turn to God.’
31 “But Abraham said, ‘If they won’t listen to Moses and the prophets, they won’t be persuaded even if someone rises from the dead.’”
