John Burnett: 17 So I hated life, because
the work that is done under the sun was grievous to me. All of it is
meaningless, a chasing after the wind. 18 I hated
all the things I had toiled for under the sun, because I must leave them to the
one who comes after me. 19 And who knows whether
that person will be wise or foolish? Yet they will have control over all
the fruit of my toil into which I have poured my effort and skill under the
sun. This too is meaningless. 20 So my heart began
to despair over all my toilsome labor under the sun. 21 For
a person may labor with wisdom, knowledge and skill, and then they must leave
all they own to another who has not toiled for it. This too is meaningless and
a great misfortune.22 What do people get for all the
toil and anxious striving with which they labor under the sun? 23 All
their days their work is grief and pain; even at night their minds do not
rest. This too is meaningless. He is right about what
happens to our material possessions. Our work spreading the truth of the
Gospel is not meaningless and God uses it to bring people unto himself. I
cannot think of anything more meaningful.
24 A person can do nothing better than to eat and
drink and find satisfaction in their own toil. This too, I see, is
from the hand of God,25 for without him, who can eat or
find enjoyment? 26 To the person who pleases him,
God gives wisdom, knowledge and happiness, but to the sinner he gives the
task of gathering and storing up wealth to hand it over to the one who
pleases God. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind. Everything we work for is given to us by God. If
we work for eternal things like spreading the Gospel, God gives wisdom,
knowledge and happiness. Those who do not repent of their sins lose
everything. He is talking about after Christ return and born again
Christians reign with Christ in His Kingdom.

Tomorrow’s reading for Ecclesiastes
3:1-8
For
everything there is a season,
a time for every activity under heaven.
2 A time to be born and a time to die.
A time to plant and a time to harvest.
3 A time to kill and a time to heal.
A time to tear down and a time to build up.
4 A time to cry and a time to laugh.
A time to grieve and a time to dance.
5 A time to scatter stones and a time to gather stones.
A time to embrace and a time to turn away.
6 A time to search and a time to quit searching.
A time to keep and a time to throw away.
7 A time to tear and a time to mend.
A time to be quiet and a time to speak.
8 A time to love and a time to hate.
A time for war and a time for peace.
a time for every activity under heaven.
