Acts 3:12-16

Rachel Workman: 12 Peter saw his opportunity and addressed the crowd. “People of Israel,” he said, “what is so surprising about this? And why stare at us as though we had made this man walk by our own power or godliness? 13 For it is the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob—the God of all our ancestors—who has brought glory to his servant Jesus by doing this. This is the same Jesus whom you handed over and rejected before Pilate, despite Pilate’s decision to release him. 14 You rejected this holy, righteous one and instead demanded the release of a murderer. 15 You killed the author of life, but God raised him from the dead. And we are witnesses of this fact!

16 “Through faith in the name of Jesus, this man was healed—and you know how crippled he was before. Faith in Jesus’ name has healed him before your very eyes.

These are pretty harsh words. Basically, Peter is asking why do you even care about this event. I mean you killed the one who was sent to save you. You demanded, pleaded and succeeded. But the truth is haven't we all rejected Christ? Haven't we all chosen our own way at one time or another? Choosing sin over what we know is right? I nailed Christ to the cross. My sin had to be paid for by his blood. I am the people of Israel.

John Burnett:  11 While he was clinging to Peter and John, all the people ran together to them at the portico named Solomon’s, completely astonished. 12 But when Peter saw this, he replied to the people, “Men of Israel, why are you amazed at this, or why are you staring at us, as though by our own power or godliness we had made him walk? 13 The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified His servant Jesus, the one whom you handed over and disowned in the presence of Pilate, when he had decided to release Him. 14 But you disowned the Holy and Righteous One, and asked for a murderer to be granted to you, 15 but put to death the Prince of life, whom God raised from the dead, a fact to which we are witnesses. 16 And on the basis of faith in His name, it is the name of Jesus which has strengthened this man whom you see and know; and the faith which comes through Him has given him this perfect health in the presence of you all.

Peter was reminding the people what they had done to Jesus and that it was Jesus that gave the man his perfect health due to the man's faith.  This sermon is a foreshadowing of the glorified bodies we will receive if we have been granted a saving faith by the Holy Spirit like the lame man in this story.  We are unable to walk with God due to our sinful nature just like the lame man could not walk with his disability.  It is fully dependent on God healing us of our sin condition by washing us in the blood of Jesus Christ.

Tomorrow’s reading for Acts 3:17-23

17 “Friends,[c] I realize that what you and your leaders did to Jesus was done in ignorance. 18 But God was fulfilling what all the prophets had foretold about the Messiah—that he must suffer these things. 19 Now repent of your sins and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped away. 20 Then times of refreshment will come from the presence of the Lord, and he will again send you Jesus, your appointed Messiah. 21 For he must remain in heaven until the time for the final restoration of all things, as God promised long ago through his holy prophets. 22 Moses said, ‘The Lord your God will raise up for you a Prophet like me from among your own people. Listen carefully to everything he tells you.’[d] 23 Then Moses said, ‘Anyone who will not listen to that Prophet will be completely cut off from God’s people.’[e]

Acts 3:7-11

Pat Bell: God continues to perform miracles on this earth.

John Burnett:  And grasping him by the right hand, he raised him up; and immediately his feet and his ankles were strengthened. And leaping up, he stood and began to walk; and he entered the temple with them, walking and leaping and praising God. And all the people saw him walking and praising God; 10 and they recognized him as being the very one who used to sit at the Beautiful Gate of the temple to beg for charitable gifts, and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.  Making this lame man walk is small potatoes compared to raising a dead man to eternal life.  This is what happens every time a sinner's eyes are opened to their sin, they repent, and they put their trust fully in the work of Jesus Christ on the Cross as the payment for their sins.  The same leaping and praising should apply when a sinner is saved as it is a much bigger deal.

Peter’s Second Sermon

11 While he was clinging to Peter and John, all the people ran together to them at the portico named Solomon’s, completely astonished.

Acts 3:1-6

Rachel Workman: 3 Peter and John went to the Temple one afternoon to take part in the three o’clock prayer service. As they approached the Temple, a man lame from birth was being carried in. Each day he was put beside the Temple gate, the one called the Beautiful Gate, so he could beg from the people going into the Temple. When he saw Peter and John about to enter, he asked them for some money.

Peter and John looked at him intently, and Peter said, “Look at us!” The lame man looked at them eagerly, expecting some money. But Peter said, “I don’t have any silver or gold for you. But I’ll give you what I have. In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene,[a] get up and[b] walk!”

Eagerly expecting one thing and getting something much better. That is what God is capable of.

John Burnett:  Now Peter and John were going up to the temple at the ninth hour, the hour of prayer. And a man who had been unable to walk from birth was being carried, whom they used to set down every day at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful, in order for him to beg for charitable gifts from those entering the temple groundsWhen he saw Peter and John about to go into the temple grounds, he began asking to receive a charitable gift. But Peter, along with John, looked at him intently and said, “Look at us!” And he gave them his attention, expecting to receive something from them. But Peter said, “I do not have silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you: In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, walk!”  We should all be like the beggar who cannot walk.  Our handicap is our sin and we should be begging for God's grace and mercy.  The problem is that the world thinks they can walk and that it is full of good people when the exact opposite is true.  Peter, representing Jesus Christ, healed this man of his handicap.  The Holy Spirit does the same for us today.  He opens our eyes and frees us our sin handicap and because our hearts are wretched and deceitful, He gives us a new heart and we become a new creation.

Monday’s reading for Acts 3:7-11

Then Peter took the lame man by the right hand and helped him up. And as he did, the man’s feet and ankles were instantly healed and strengthened. He jumped up, stood on his feet, and began to walk! Then, walking, leaping, and praising God, he went into the Temple with them.

All the people saw him walking and heard him praising God. 10 When they realized he was the lame beggar they had seen so often at the Beautiful Gate, they were absolutely astounded! 11 They all rushed out in amazement to Solomon’s Colonnade, where the man was holding tightly to Peter and John.
