Philippians 1:1-11

Rachel Workman: 1 This letter is from Paul and Timothy, slaves of Christ Jesus. Notice the words slaves here. Owned and cared for by their master.

I am writing to all of God’s holy people in Philippi who belong to Christ Jesus, including the elders and deacons.

2 May God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give you grace and peace. These are God's true blessings.

3 Every time I think of you, I give thanks to my God. 4 Whenever I pray, I make my requests for all of you with joy, 5 for you have been my partners in spreading the Good News about Christ from the time you first heard it until now. 6 And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns. God never starts anything he doesn't finish.

7 So it is right that I should feel as I do about all of you, for you have a special place in my heart. You share with me the special favor of God, both in my imprisonment and in defending and confirming the truth of the Good News. 8 God knows how much I love you and long for you with the tender compassion of Christ Jesus.

9 I pray that your love will overflow more and more, and that you will keep on growing in knowledge and understanding. 10 For I want you to understand what really matters, so that you may live pure and blameless lives until the day of Christ’s return. 11 May you always be filled with the fruit of your salvation—the righteous character produced in your life by Jesus Christ—for this will bring much glory and praise to God. I love these verses. I love how they said I want you to understand what really matters and may you always be filled with the fruit of your salvation. The fruit of salvation being a righteous character which is produced by Christ. I would say by reading this it's safe to say we can't continue in our sinful state and receive salvation. Salvation produces the fruit of righteous characters. That's not to say we don't sin but we don't seek to sin. Christ roots out the sinfulness of our human nature over a lifetime. It's a good thing he's patient. I would give up on people well before Christ even thinks about it.

John Burnett:  1 Paul and Timothy, bond-servants of Christ Jesus,
To all the [a]saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi, [b]including the overseers and deacons: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, always offering prayer with joy in my every prayer for you all, When we pray for others we should be offering the prayer with joy because we belong to the one who can answer it. in view of your [c]participation in the gospel from the first day until now. For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus. Isn’t it great to have this kind of confidence?  Being justified means we have started the process of sanctification, where we become more like Christ with the Holy Spirit’s help. 7 [d]For it is only right for me to feel this way about you all, because I have you in my heart, since both in my [e]imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel, you all are partakers of grace with me.  Paul was constantly thinking of others and spreading the gospel, even in prison.  Like Paul are you willing to go to prison or die for the gospel?  I say there is no better way to go. For God is my witness, how I long for you all with the [f]affection of Christ Jesus. And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in real knowledge and all discernment, Knowledge of the truth of the gospel is crucial in this day and age.  There are so many false teachers, teaching a gospel that does not save 10 so that you may [g]approve the things that are excellent, in order to be sincere and blameless [h]until the day of Christ; 11 having been filled with the fruit of righteousness which comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.  We are given a helper in the Holy Spirit, which helps us understand scripture and gives us the eyes to see and ears to hear.  Praise be to God for His Faithfulness.

Krista Cook:  I have written in my Bible that chapter 1 is about the Joy in Living - it's an account of present circumstances.
Paul is thankful (v.3), prayerful (v.4,9), and joyful (v.4).
I love the things he prays for in verses 9-1.  These are things we should be praying for our brothers and sisters in Christ even today.

Allen Michaels:  I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy Believers can have profound contentment, serenity, and peace no matter what happens. This JOY comes from knowing Christ personally and depending on His strength rather than our own. We can have joy, even in hardship. Joy does not come from outward circumstances, but from inward strength. As Christians, we must not rely on what we have or what we experience to give us joy, but on Christ within us. because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, Paul was pointing out their valuable contribution in spreading God’s message. As we help our ministers, missionaries, and evangelists through prayer, hospitality, and financial donations, we become partners with them. being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. Do you sometimes feel as though you aren’t making progress in your spiritual life? When God starts a project, He completes it. God will help you grow in grace until He has completed His work in your life. When you are discouraged, remember that God won’t give up on you. He promises to finish the work He has begun. When you feel incomplete, unfinished, or distressed by your shortcomings, remember God’s promise and provision. Don’t let your present condition rob you of the joy of knowing Christ or keep you from growing closer to Him.

It is right for me to feel this way about all of you, since I have you in my heart and, whether I am in chains or defending and confirming the gospel, all of you share in God’s grace with me. God can testify how I long for all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus. Paul’s love and affection for them was based not merely past experiences, but also on the unity that comes when believers draw upon Christ’s love. All Christians are part of God’s family and thus share equally in the transforming power of His love. Do you feel a deep love for fellow Christians, friends, and strangers alike? Let Christ’s love motivate you to love other Christians and to express that love in your actions towards them.
And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, Often the best way to influence someone is to pray for them.10 so that you may be able to discern what is best (in other words, that they would have the ability to differentiate between right and wrong, good and bad, vital and trivial. We ought to pray for morals and values) and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, “day of Christ” refers to the time when God WILL judge the world through Jesus the Christ. We should live each day as though He could return at any moment. 11 filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ—to the glory and praise of God. The “fruit of righteousness” includes all of the character traits flowing from a right relationship with God. There is no other way for us to gain this fruit of righteousness than through Christ.
