Psalm 37:27-40

Rachel Workman: 27 Turn from evil and do good,
    and you will live in the land forever.
28 For the Lord loves justice,
    and he will never abandon the godly.

He will keep them safe forever,
    but the children of the wicked will die.
29 The godly will possess the land
    and will live there forever.
30 The godly offer good counsel;
    they teach right from wrong.
31 They have made God’s law their own,
    so they will never slip from his path.
32 The wicked wait in ambush for the godly,
    looking for an excuse to kill them. Do we not see this every day? So much hatred in today's world.
33 But the Lord will not let the wicked succeed
    or let the godly be condemned when they are put on trial.
34 Put your hope in the Lord.
    Travel steadily along his path.
He will honor you by giving you the land.
    You will see the wicked destroyed. I pick up on the word hope here. Put your hope in the Lord. Our hope is in what Christ has already done for us.
35 I have seen wicked and ruthless people
    flourishing like a tree in its native soil.
36 But when I looked again, they were gone!
    Though I searched for them, I could not find them!
37 Look at those who are honest and good,
    for a wonderful future awaits those who love peace.
38 But the rebellious will be destroyed;
    they have no future.
39 The Lord rescues the godly;
    he is their fortress in times of trouble.
40 The Lord helps them,
    rescuing them from the wicked.
He saves them,
    and they find shelter in him. When I read these verses what I see is goodness is eternal. Evil will be destroyed.

John Burnett:  27 Depart from evil and do good,
[a]So you will abide forever.
28 For the Lord loves [b]justice
And does not forsake His godly ones;
They are preserved forever,
But the [c]descendants of the wicked will be cut off.
29 The righteous will inherit the land
And dwell in it forever.
30 The mouth of the righteous utters wisdom,
And his tongue speaks justice.
31 The law of his God is in his heart;
His steps do not slip.
32 The wicked spies upon the righteous
And seeks to kill him.
33 The Lord will not leave him in his hand
Or let him be condemned when he is judged.
34 Wait for the Lord and keep His way,
And He will exalt you to inherit the land;
When the wicked are cut off, you will see it.  The world wants us to think that God is a loving God and that his love for us will supersede his love for justice.  It is His love for us that sets us apart from His justice and wrath.
35 I have seen a wicked, violent man
Spreading himself like a luxuriant [d]tree in its native soil.
36 Then [e]he passed away, and lo, he was no more;
I sought for him, but he could not be found.
37 Mark the [f]blameless man, and behold the upright;
For the man of peace will have a [g]posterity.
38 But transgressors will be altogether destroyed;
The [h]posterity of the wicked will be cut off.
39 But the salvation of the righteous is from the Lord;
He is their strength in time of trouble.
40 The Lord helps them and delivers them;
He delivers them from the wicked and saves them,
Because they take refuge in Him.  No matter how bad this world becomes before Jesus’s return, we have these promises which should bring us joy in knowing we will be delivered.

Allen Michaels:  27 Depart from evil, and do good;
And dwell forevermore.
We must not envy the doers of evil, but depart altogether from their spirit and example. Just as Lot left Sodom without looking back, we must also leave sin. When we neglect to live righteously we will soon fall into evil. And dwell there forever. Obtain an abiding and quiet inheritance. Short lived are the gains and pleasures of evil, but eternal are the rewards of grace.
28 For the Lord loves justice,
And does not forsake His saints;
They are preserved forever,
But the descendants of the wicked shall be cut off.
If you’ve been wronged, get the long‑range picture. God is a God of justice; He will right all wrongs someday.
29 The righteous shall inherit the land,
And dwell in it forever.

30 The mouth of the righteous speaks wisdom,
And his tongue talks of justice.
31 The law of his God is in his heart;
None of his steps shall slide.
If your thought life is being shaped by Scripture, then your words will become progressively righteous. When someone wrongs you, rather than lashing out with abusive speech, you will speak words of wisdom (37:30) that build up and give a blessing. And, if your thought life and words are in conformity with Scripture, you won’t retaliate with wrong actions (37:27). Instead of responding to evil with evil, you will seek to overcome evil with good. Instead of being mean, you’ll respond with kindness.

32 The wicked watches the righteous,
And seeks to slay him.
33 The Lord will not leave him in his hand,
Nor condemn him when he is judged.

34 Wait on the Lord,
And keep His way,
And He shall exalt you to inherit the land;
When the wicked are cut off, you shall see it.
It is difficult to wait patiently for God to act when we want to change immediately. But God promises that if we submit to His timing, He will honor us. Peter said, “Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that He may lift you up in due time” (1 Peter 5:6). Be patient, steadily doing the work God has given you to do, and allow God to choose the best time to change your circumstances.

35 I have seen the wicked in great power,
And spreading himself like a native green tree.
36 Yet he passed away, and behold, he was no more;
Indeed I sought him, but he could not be found.

37 Mark the blameless man, and observe the upright;
For the future of that man is peace.
38 But the transgressors shall be destroyed together;
The future of the wicked shall be cut off.

39 But the salvation of the righteous is from the Lord;
He is their strength in the time of trouble.
40 And the Lord shall help them and deliver them;
He shall deliver them from the wicked,
And save them,
Because they trust in Him.
If you take refuge in God, you can trust Him to judge righteously and vindicate you.
