Rachel Workman: 5 I am not overstating it when I say that the man who caused all the trouble hurt all of you more than he hurt me. 6 Most of you opposed him, and that was punishment enough. 7 Now, however, it is time to forgive and comfort him. Otherwise he may be overcome by discouragement. 8 So I urge you now to reaffirm your love for him. It would appear as if Paul is asking the impossible here. To forgive and comfort someone who has caused us grief is one of the hardest things to do as a human. But I have no doubt it's exactly what we are called to do. How can we be forgiven if we can't forgive. How many times have we hurt God and he still forgave us and comforted us?
9 I wrote to you as I did to test you
and see if you would fully comply with my instructions. 10 When
you forgive this man, I forgive him, too. And when I forgive whatever needs to
be forgiven, I do so with Christ’s authority for your benefit, 11 so
that Satan will not outsmart us. For we are familiar with his evil schemes.
12 When I came to the city of Troas to
preach the Good News of Christ, the Lord opened a door of opportunity for me. 13 But
I had no peace of mind because my dear brother Titus hadn’t yet arrived with a
report from you. So I said good-bye and went on to Macedonia to find him.

John Burnett: 5 If anyone has caused
grief, he has not so much grieved me as he has grieved all of you to some
extent—not to put it too severely. 6 The
punishment inflicted on him by the majority is sufficient. 7 Now
instead, you ought to forgive and comfort him, so that he will not be
overwhelmed by excessive sorrow. 8 I urge you,
therefore, to reaffirm your love for him. 9 Another
reason I wrote you was to see if you would stand the test and be obedient
in everything. 10 Anyone you forgive, I also
forgive. And what I have forgiven—if there was anything to forgive—I have
forgiven in the sight of Christ for your sake, 11 in
order that Satan might not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his
schemes. Satan is the great imitator and he
likes to add just enough truth to outwit potential or new believers. We
need to be aware of schemes.

Christ and found that the Lord had opened a door for me, 13 I
still had no peace of mind, because I did not find my brother
Titus there. So I said goodbye to them and went on to Macedonia.

had been punished by the church and had subsequently repented. We must always
be ready to “forgive those who sin
against us.” (Matthew 6:12 NLT) Until we are ready to
forgive those that have hurt us, we can’t possibly expect God to forgive us.
Carrying grudges does nothing but open the door for Satan to the upper hand in
our lives. For if you forgive other
people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. (Matthew 6:14)

Tomorrow's reading for 2 Corinthians 2:14-17
14 But thank God! He has made us his
captives and continues to lead us along in Christ’s triumphal procession. Now
he uses us to spread the knowledge of Christ everywhere, like a sweet perfume. 15 Our
lives are a Christ-like fragrance rising up to God. But this fragrance is
perceived differently by those who are being saved and by those who are perishing.
16 To those who are perishing, we are a dreadful smell of death
and doom. But to those who are being saved, we are a life-giving perfume. And
who is adequate for such a task as this?
