Rachel Workman: 15 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds
said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has
happened, which the Lord has told us about.”
16 So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who
was lying in the manger. 17 When they had seen him,
they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child,
18 and all who heard it were
amazed at what the shepherds said to them. 19 But Mary treasured up all
these things and pondered them in her heart. 20 The shepherds returned,
glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which
were just as they had been told.
21 On the eighth day, when it was time to circumcise the child, he
was named Jesus, the name the angel had given him before he was conceived. I
can't imagine what Mary must have been thinking during all of this. Time and
time again she witnessed miracle after miracle. She was now the mother of a
child that she knew was sent from God but how could she grasp all of it?

commission before the great commission. We should have the same
excitement about our salvation in Christ Jesus and be sharing what we have like
they shared what they had learned that night on a hill outside of Bethlehem.
21 On the eighth day, when it was time to
circumcise the child, he was named Jesus, the name the angel had given him
before he was conceived. The Name above all names.

Pat Bell:
Can you imagine seeing Jesus as a baby! What a wonderful feeling
that must have been!

Commentary:
Our
Lord Jesus was not born in sin, and did not need that mortification of a
corrupt nature, or that renewal unto holiness, which were signified by
circumcision. This ordinance was, in his case, a pledge of his future perfect
obedience to the whole law, in the midst of sufferings and temptations, even
unto death for us. At the end of forty days, Mary went up to the temple to
offer the appointed sacrifices for her purification. Joseph also presented the
holy child Jesus, because, as a first-born son, he was to be presented to the
Lord, and redeemed according to the law. Let us present our children to the
Lord who gave them to us, beseeching him to redeem them from sin and death, and
make them holy to himself.

Tomorrow’s reading for Luke 2:22-32
25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and devout. He was waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was on him. 26 It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. 27 Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of the Law required, 28 Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying:
29 “Sovereign Lord, as you
have promised,
you may now dismiss[d] your servant in peace.
30 For my eyes have seen your salvation,
31 which you have prepared in the sight of all nations:
32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles,
and the glory of your people Israel.”
you may now dismiss[d] your servant in peace.
30 For my eyes have seen your salvation,
31 which you have prepared in the sight of all nations:
32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles,
and the glory of your people Israel.”
