Rachel Workman:
41 “Why
do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention
to the plank in your own eye? 42 How can you say to your
brother, ‘Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when you yourself
fail to see the plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out
of your eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your
brother’s eye. That seems to be a common factor among many many people.
43 “No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. 44 Each tree is recognized by its own fruit. People do not pick figs from thornbushes, or grapes from briers. 45 A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of. Amen to these verses. Even that said in a joking way is truly meant. I've always believed that.

John Burnett:
41 “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and
pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? 42 How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take the speck
out of your eye,’ when you yourself fail to see the plank in your own eye? You
hypocrite, first take the plank out of your eye, and then you will see clearly
to remove the speck from your brother’s eye. Corresponding passage in Matthew chapter 7. Unless we have
removed the plank from our own eye, we shouldn’t addressing others
specks. Once we remove the plank we should see that we have no business
addressing others specks. We should judge ourself more harshly and
realize what wretched sinners we are before we discuss one sin of another.
A Tree and Its Fruit
43 “No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad
tree bear good fruit.44 Each tree is recognized by its own
fruit. People do not pick figs from thorn bushes, or grapes from
briers. 45 A good man brings good things out of the good
stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil
stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of. Dear Lord, please help me to only bring about good fruit.

Allen Michaels:
41 “Why do you look
at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank
in your own eye? Jesus doesn’t mean we should ignore
wrong doing, but we should not be so worried about others’ sins that we
overlook our own. We often rationalize our sins by pointing out the same
mistakes in others. 42 How can you say to your
brother, ‘Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when you yourself
fail to see the plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out
of your eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your
brother’s eye. We should not be so afraid of the
label hypocrite that we stand still in our Christian life, hiding our
faith and making no attempt to grow. A person who tries to do right but often
fails is not a hypocrite. Neither are those who fulfill their duty even when
they don’t feel like doing it—it is often necessary and good to set aside our
desires in order to do what needs doing. It is not hypocrisy to be weak in
faith. A hypocrite is a person who puts on religious behavior in order to gain
attention, approval, acceptance, or admiration from others.
A Tree and
Its Fruit
43 “No good tree
bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. 44 Each
tree is recognized by its own fruit. People do not pick figs from thornbushes,
or grapes from briers. 45 A good man brings good things out of
the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the
evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of. Jesus reminds us that our speech and actions reveal the true
underlying beliefs, attitudes, and motivations. The good impressions we try to
make cannot last if our hearts are deceptive. What is in our hearts will come
out in our speech and behavior.

Tomorrow’s reading for Luke 6:46-49
46 “Why
do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say? 47 As
for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice, I
will show you what they are like. 48 They are like a man
building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a
flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was
well built. 49 But the one who hears my words and does not put
them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a
foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its
destruction was complete.”
