Luke 24:13-18

Rachel Workman: ¹³ That same day two of Jesus’ followers were walking to the village of Emmaus, seven miles^[c] from Jerusalem. ¹⁴ As they walked along they were talking about everything that had happened. ¹⁵ As they talked and discussed these things, Jesus himself suddenly came and began walking with them. ¹⁶ But God kept them from recognizing him. You have to wonder if this still happens.

¹⁷ He asked them, “What are you discussing so intently as you walk along?”

They stopped short, sadness written across their faces. ¹⁸ Then one of them, Cleopas, replied, “You must be the only person in Jerusalem who hasn’t heard about all the things that have happened there the last few days.”

John Burnett:  ¹³ And behold, two of them were going that very day to a village named Emmaus, which was ^[a]about seven miles from Jerusalem. ¹⁴ And they were talking with each other about all these things, which had taken place. ¹⁵ While they were talking and discussing, Jesus Himself approached and began traveling with them. ¹⁶ But their eyes were prevented from recognizing Him. ¹⁷ And He said to them, “What are these words that you are exchanging with one another as you are walking?” And they stood still, looking sad. ¹⁸ One of them, named Cleopas, answered and said to Him, “Are You ^[b]the only one visiting Jerusalem and unaware of the things which have happened here in these days?”  For affect, Jesus prevented them from seeing who He was at the beginning of the conversation.  Jesus was developing the eyewitnesses to be the most credible and revealed Himself in a way that would not drum up false emotion or excitement.

Monday's reading for Luke 24:19-24

¹⁹ “What things?” Jesus asked.

“The things that happened to Jesus, the man from Nazareth,” they said. “He was a prophet who did powerful miracles, and he was a mighty teacher in the eyes of God and all the people. ²⁰ But our leading priests and other religious leaders handed him over to be condemned to death, and they crucified him. ²¹ We had hoped he was the Messiah who had come to rescue Israel. This all happened three days ago.

²² “Then some women from our group of his followers were at his tomb early this morning, and they came back with an amazing report. ²³ They said his body was missing, and they had seen angels who told them Jesus is alive! ²⁴ Some of our men ran out to see, and sure enough, his body was gone, just as the women had said.”

Luke 24:8-12

Rachel Workman: ⁸ Then they remembered that he had said this. ⁹ So they rushed back from the tomb to tell his eleven disciples—and everyone else—what had happened. ¹⁰ It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and several other women who told the apostles what had happened. ¹¹ But the story sounded like nonsense to the men, so they didn’t believe it. ¹² However, Peter jumped up and ran to the tomb to look. Stooping, he peered in and saw the empty linen wrappings; then he went home again, wondering what had happened.

It sounded like nonsense because it came out of the mouth of women. This to me is more proof that the word of God was written exactly as it happened.

John Burnett:  ⁸ And they remembered His words, ⁹ and returned from the tomb and reported all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. ¹⁰ Now they were Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the mother of James; also the other women with them were telling these things to the apostles.¹¹ But these words appeared ^[a]to them as nonsense, and they would not believe them. ¹² But Peter got up and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he *saw the linen wrappings ^[b]only; and he went away to his home, marveling at what had happened.  Peter believed and ran to see for himself.  Jesus wanted Peter to be the first apostle to see for himself that Jesus Christ had risen from the dead because He was going to use Peter in a mighty way to build His church.  Having an eye witness added credibility to the story of Christs’ death and resurrection.

If we let our hearts become hardened, we could miss a wonderful opportunity.

Luke 24:5-7

Rachel Workman: ⁵ The women were terrified and bowed with their faces to the ground. Then the men asked, “Why are you looking among the dead for someone who is alive? ⁶ He isn’t here! He is risen from the dead! Remember what he told you back in Galilee, ⁷ that the Son of Man^[b] must be betrayed into the hands of sinful men and be crucified, and that he would rise again on the third day.

These verses are beautiful. It's very humbling knowing what Jesus did for me knowing that I don't deserve it.

John Burnett:  ⁵ and as the women were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, “Why do you seek the living One among the dead? ⁶ He is not here, but He has ^[a]risen. Remember how He spoke to you while He was still in Galilee, ⁷ saying that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.”  Obviously, they had forgotten what Jesus had said or they would not have been surprised.  Jesus had told them the truth and it happened the exact way that He said it would.  His Death and Resurrection had been planned before creation and His mercy was displayed on the cross, His power was shown in His resurrection, and His amazing grace is evidenced by eternal life in heaven with Him.
