Rachel Workman: 28 By this time they were nearing
Emmaus and the end of their journey. Jesus acted as if he were going on, 29 but they begged him, “Stay
the night with us, since it is getting late.” So he went home with them.
30 As they sat down to eat,[d]
he took the bread and blessed it. Then he broke it and gave it to them.
31 Suddenly, their eyes were
opened, and they recognized him. And at that moment he disappeared! I'm
grateful that my eye have been opened.
32 They said to each other, “Didn’t
our hearts burn within us as he talked with us on the road and explained the
Scriptures to us?” 33 And within the hour they
were on their way back to Jerusalem. There they found the eleven disciples and
the others who had gathered with them, 34 who said, “The Lord has
really risen! He appeared to Peter.[e]”
This important verse shows us that
our hearts hold the answers. But we can’t rely on our hearts alone. It’s when
the Holy Spirit dwells within us that we can trust it. I don't know how people
who don't believe exist without the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

John Burnett: 25 And He said to
them, “O foolish men and slow of heart to believe in all that the
prophets have spoken! 26 Was it not necessary for
the [a]Christ to suffer these things and to
enter into His glory?” 27 Then beginning [b]with Moses and [c]with all the prophets, He
explained to them the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures.
28 And they approached the village where they were going,
and He acted as though He were going farther. 29 But
they urged Him, saying, “Stay with us, for it is getting toward
evening, and the day [d]is now nearly over.” So He went in to
stay with them. 30 When He had reclined at
the table with them, He took the bread and blessed it,
and breaking it, He began giving it to
them. 31 Then their eyes were opened and they
recognized Him; and He vanished from [e]their sight. 32 They
said to one another, “[f]Were not our hearts burning within us
while He was speaking to us on the road, while He was [g]explaining the Scriptures to us?”33 And
they got up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem, and found gathered
the eleven and those who were with them, 34 saying,
“The Lord has really risen and has appeared to Simon.” Eyewitnesses that saw the
Risen King. The resurrection is shows that God the Father accepted Jesus
Christ as the all-sufficient sacrifice for the world’s sins. I pray that
he opens everyone’s eyes just as he opened the eyes of the men on the road to
Emmaus.

Pat Bell: They felt so foolish for
not understanding Jesus. I have had similar experiences. It is so simple when
you finally see what he already knows!

Tomorrow’s reading for Luke 24:41-49.
41 Still they stood there in
disbelief, filled with joy and wonder. Then he asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat?” 42 They gave him a piece of
broiled fish, 43 and he ate it as they
watched.
44 Then he said, “When I was with you before, I
told you that everything written about me in the law of Moses and the prophets
and in the Psalms must be fulfilled.” 45 Then he opened their
minds to understand the Scriptures. 46 And he said, “Yes, it was written long ago that the
Messiah would suffer and die and rise from the dead on the third day.
47 It was also written that this message
would be proclaimed in the authority of his name to all the nations,[f]
beginning in Jerusalem: ‘There is forgiveness of sins for all who repent.’
48 You are witnesses of all these things.
49 “And now I will send the Holy
Spirit, just as my Father promised. But stay here in the city until the Holy
Spirit comes and fills you with power from heaven.
