Pat Bell: A good
reputation is more valuable than costly perfume.
This is great
advice!
And the day you die is better than the day you are born.
2 Better to spend your time at funerals than at parties.
After all, everyone dies—
so the living should take this to heart.
3 Sorrow is better than laughter,
for sadness has a refining influence on us.
4 A wise person thinks a lot about death,
while a fool thinks only about having a good time.
And the day you die is better than the day you are born.

This verse tells me
to get my head out of the clouds, and think about how i am living,

John Burnett: 7 A good name is better
than a good ointment,
And the day of one’s death is better than the day of one’s birth.
2 It is better to go to a house of mourning
Than to go to a house of feasting,
Because [a]that is the end of every man,
And the living [b]takes it to [c]heart .
3 Sorrow is better than laughter,
For when a face is sad a heart may be happy.
4 The [d]mind of the wise is in the house of mourning,
While the [e]mind of fools is in the house of pleasure.
And the day of one’s death is better than the day of one’s birth.

Solomon is writing to a specific audience and I don’t know if I fit in with the
crowd. I agree with verse one in that a good name is a good thing and
means you can be trusted, which is something that is very important to
me. Knowing what I know about Christ now, the wise man will mourn over
his sin and that it caused Christ to have to die on the cross. If Christ
died only for me, it would still require him to die on the cross due to the
sinfulness of my sin; however, I do not mourn for my sin long because He gives
me great joy in knowing that He no longer sees my sin and has already paid the
penalty for my sin. I stand in amazement of the grace (unmerited favor)
He has shown me.

Tomorrow’s reading for Ecclesiastes
7:5-9
Better to be criticized by a wise person
than to be praised by a fool.
6 A fool’s laughter is quickly gone,
like thorns crackling in a fire.
This also is meaningless.
than to be praised by a fool.
6 A fool’s laughter is quickly gone,
like thorns crackling in a fire.
This also is meaningless.
7 Extortion turns wise people into
fools,
and bribes corrupt the heart.
and bribes corrupt the heart.
8 Finishing is better than starting.
Patience is better than pride.
Patience is better than pride.
9 Control your temper,
for anger labels you a fool.
for anger labels you a fool.
