Rachel Workman: Don’t be fooled by those who try
to excuse these sins, for the anger of God will fall on all who disobey him. 7 Don’t
participate in the things these people do. 8 For once you were
full of darkness, but now you have light from the Lord. So live as people of
light! 9 For this light within you produces only what is good
and right and true.
10 Carefully determine what pleases the
Lord. 11 Take no part in the worthless deeds of evil and
darkness; instead, expose them. 12 It is shameful even to talk
about the things that ungodly people do in secret. 13 But their
evil intentions will be exposed when the light shines on them, 14 for
the light makes everything visible. This is why it is said,
“Awake, O sleeper,
rise up from the dead,
and Christ will give you light.”
rise up from the dead,
and Christ will give you light.”
Interesting how is says it's shameful to even
speak of the things ungodly people do in secret. I think we've surpassed that.
We make movies about it and people pay money to go see them. The more we see
the more our minds are depraved. We become desensitized and detached and the
lines begin to blur.

Mike Grimm: 6Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes on those who are disobedient. 7Therefore do not be associated with them. Paul
is not forbidding all contact with unbelievers. Jesus taught His
followers to befriend sinners and lead them to Him (Luke 5:30-32).
Instead, Paul is speaking against condoning the lifestyle of people who
make excuses for bad behavior and recommend its practice to others --
whether they are inside the church or outside of it. We must befriend
unbelievers if we are to lead them to Christ, but we must be wary of
those who are viciously evil, immoral, or opposed to all that
Christianity stands for. Such people are more likely to influence us for
evil than we are likely to influence them for good. 8For once you were darkness, but now in the Lord you are light. Live as children of light— As
children of light, our actions should reflect our faith. We should live
above reproach morally so that we will reflect God's goodness to
others. Jesus stressed this truth in the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew
5:15, 16). 9for the fruit of the light is found in all that is good and right and true. 10Try to find out what is pleasing to the Lord. 11Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. 12For it is shameful even to mention what such people do secretly; 13but everything exposed by the light becomes visible, 14for everything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says,
“Sleeper, awake!
Rise from the dead,
and Christ will shine on you.”
It
is important to avoid the "unfruitful works of darkness" (any pleasure
or activity that results in sin), but we must go further. Paul instructs
us to expose these deeds, because our silence may be interpreted as
approval. God needs people who will take a stand for what is right.
Christian's must lovingly speak out for what is true and right.

John Burnett: 6 Let no one deceive
you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes
upon the sons of disobedience. 7 Therefore do
not become partners with them; 8 for at one
time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as
children of light 9 (for the fruit of light is
found in all that is good and right and true), 10 and try
to discern what is pleasing to the Lord. 11 Take no
part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose
them. 12 For it is shameful even to speak of
the things that they do in secret. 13 But
when anything is exposed by the light, it becomes visible, 14 for
anything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says,
“Awake, O sleeper,
and arise from the dead,
and Christ will shine on you.”
and arise from the dead,
and Christ will shine on you.”
This passage gives us instructions
to be discerning of the truth and not deceived by false teachers. We were
all dead and asleep in our sin but only those Christ shines on and will arise
from the dead.

Monday’s reading for Ephesians 5:15-20.
15 So be careful how you live. Don’t live
like fools, but like those who are wise. 16 Make the most of every
opportunity in these evil days. 17 Don’t act thoughtlessly,
but understand what the Lord wants you to do. 18 Don’t be drunk with wine,
because that will ruin your life. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit,
19 singing psalms
and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, and making music to the Lord in
your hearts. 20 And
give thanks for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus
Christ.
