Matthew 10:5-10

Rachel Workman: Jesus sent out the twelve apostles with these instructions: “Don’t go to the Gentiles or the Samaritans, but only to the people of Israel—God’s lost sheep. Go and announce to them that the Kingdom of Heaven is near.[d] Heal the sick, raise the dead, cure those with leprosy, and cast out demons. Give as freely as you have received!
“Don’t take any money in your money belts—no gold, silver, or even copper coins. 10 Don’t carry a traveler’s bag with a change of clothes and sandals or even a walking stick. Don’t hesitate to accept hospitality, because those who work deserve to be fed.
Here Jesus is asking them go with nothing in preparation. There were not to even take a change of clothes. Go with nothing, travel with nothing and store nothing. Their needs were to be met daily and several times a day by complete strangers. They would need water and food at the least more than once a day. What amazing faith. I do wonder if they doubted in their times of true needs and wants. Maybe there was a day or two that they went without food? I don't know. But what I do know is Jesus said go, do in my name and I'll take care of the rest. Don't try and collect things to take care of yourself with I will take care of you and your needs. And he did.

John Burnett:  These twelve Jesus sent out after instructing them: “Do not [f]go [g]in the way of the Gentiles, and do not enter any city of the Samaritans; but rather go to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. And as you go, [h]preach, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven [i]is at hand.’ Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons. Freely you received, freely give. Do not acquire gold, or silver, or copper for your money belts, 10 or a [j]bag for your journey, or even two [k]coats, or sandals, or a staff; for the worker is worthy of his [l]support.  The disciples were called to walk by faith and were given power and authority to do miracles to authenticate the message they were preaching.  Mark 1:15 is a verse where Jesus uses similar language about the kingdom of heaven being at hand, but he adds the act of repentance and believing the gospel as common.
