Allen Michaels: 25 Circumcision has value if you observe the law, but if you break the law, you have become as though you had not been
circumcised. 26 So then, if those who are not circumcised
keep the law’s requirements, will they not be regarded as though they
were circumcised?
27 The one who is not circumcised physically and yet obeys the law will condemn you who, even though you have the
written code and circumcision, are a lawbreaker. Paul
indicates that even circumcision will not ensure salvation. He is quite
clear that circumcision is only valuable “if”
you continually practice the Law. For those Jews who have failed to
keep the Law and are relying on their circumcision, it’s
“uncircumcision.”
Nowadays,
circumcision doesn’t mean to us what it meant to the Jews. To us,
circumcision is an optional physical act performed on baby boys. Some
are circumcised; some aren’t. Outside
of the Jewish faith, few people are circumcised for religious reasons.
Most undergo the procedure for hygienic reasons. But the act of
circumcision was incredibly significant to Jews. God first instituted
circumcision as a “sign of the covenant” that God entered
into with Abraham and his descendants (Gen 17:10-14).
28 A person is not a Jew who is one only outwardly, nor is circumcision merely outward and physical.
29 No, a person is a Jew who is one inwardly; and
circumcision is circumcision of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the
written code. Such a person’s praise is not from other people, but from
God.
To
be a Jew meant you were in God’s family, an heir to all his promises.
Yet Paul made it clear that membership in God’s family is based on
internal, not external, qualities. All whose
hearts are right with God are real Jews—that is, part of God’s family.
Attending church or being baptized, confirmed, or accepted for
membership is not enough, just as submitting to circumcision was not
enough for the Jews. God desires our heartfelt devotion
and obedience.

3 True, some of them were unfaithful; but just because they were unfaithful, does that mean God will be unfaithful? 4 Of course not! Even if everyone else is a liar, God is true. As the Scriptures say about him,
5 “But,” some might say, “our sinfulness serves a good purpose, for it helps people see how righteous God is. Isn’t it unfair, then, for him to punish us?” (This is merely a human point of view.) 6 Of course not! If God were not entirely fair, how would he be qualified to judge the world? 7 “But,” someone might still argue, “how can God condemn me as a sinner if my dishonesty highlights his truthfulness and brings him more glory?” 8 And some people even slander us by claiming that we say, “The more we sin, the better it is!” Those who say such things deserve to be condemned.
