Rachel Workman: 24 Then they began to argue among
themselves about who would be the greatest among them. 25 Jesus
told them, “In this world the kings and great men lord it over their people,
yet they are called ‘friends of the people.’ 26 But among you
it will be different. Those who are the greatest among you should take the
lowest rank, and the leader should be like a servant. 27 Who is
more important, the one who sits at the table or the one who serves? The one
who sits at the table, of course. But not here! For I am among you as one who
serves. I love how Jesus puts this. He humbled himself by putting himself on
even grounds with us. No one of us is more important than the other. Before we
start to elevate ourselves we need to look at the example Jesus has already set
for us.
28 “You have stayed with me in my time of
trial. 29 And just as my Father has granted me a Kingdom, I now
grant you the right 30 to eat and drink at my table in my
Kingdom. And you will sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

John Burnett: 24 And there arose also a dispute among them as
to which one of them was regarded to be greatest. 25 And
He said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those
who have authority over them are called ‘Benefactors.’ 26 But it
is not this way with you, but the one who is the greatest among
you must become like the youngest, and the leader like the servant. 27 For who
is greater, the one who reclines at the table or the one who
serves? Is it not the one who reclines at the table? But I am
among you as the one who serves.
28 “You are those who have stood by Me in
My trials; 29 and just as My Father has
granted Me a kingdom, I grant you 30 that you
may eat and drink at My table in My kingdom, and you will sit on
thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. This is an example of worldly pride sneaking into the
disciple’s heart. Pride is the root of all sin. Satan and the other
angels were cast out of heaven for their pride and thinking they could be like
God. Humility is what Christ seeks from us. The leader should be
the servant and the servant is the greatest.

Pat Bell: Such beautiful words....
"For I am among you as one who serves" I strive to have that kind of
heart...but fail often...

Tomorrow’s reading for Luke 22:31-34
31 “Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift
each of you like wheat. 32 But I have pleaded in prayer for
you, Simon, that your faith should not fail. So when you have repented and
turned to me again, strengthen your brothers.”
33 Peter said, “Lord, I am ready to go to
prison with you, and even to die with you.”
34 But Jesus said, “Peter, let me tell
you something. Before the rooster crows tomorrow morning, you will deny three
times that you even know me.”
