Psalm 5:1-12

Rachel Workman: O Lord, hear me as I pray;
    pay attention to my groaning.
2 Listen to my cry for help, my King and my God,
    for I pray to no one but you.
3 Listen to my voice in the morning, Lord.
    Each morning I bring my requests to you and wait expectantly.

4 O God, you take no pleasure in wickedness;
    you cannot tolerate the sins of the wicked.
5 Therefore, the proud may not stand in your presence,
    for you hate all who do evil.
6 You will destroy those who tell lies.
    The Lord detests murderers and deceivers.

7 Because of your unfailing love, I can enter your house;
    I will worship at your Temple with deepest awe.
8 Lead me in the right path, O Lord,
    or my enemies will conquer me.
Make your way plain for me to follow.

Verse 8 stands out to me. Lead me in the right path, O Lord, or my enemies will conquer me. What a true statement that is. If we are not on the narrow path the enemy is going to destroy us.

9 My enemies cannot speak a truthful word.
    Their deepest desire is to destroy others.
Their talk is foul, like the stench from an open grave.
    Their tongues are filled with flattery.[a]
10 O God, declare them guilty.
    Let them be caught in their own traps.
Drive them away because of their many sins,
    for they have rebelled against you.

11 But let all who take refuge in you rejoice;
    let them sing joyful praises forever.
Spread your protection over them,
    that all who love your name may be filled with joy.
12 For you bless the godly, O Lord;
    you surround them with your shield of love.
I love these verses. There is not one person this email won't reach that can't claim they are blessed. We are blessed people beyond measure. Just the religious freedom that we have is a blessing and the list can go on for days. I can't imagine a better lot in life than to be surrounded by God's shield of love.

John Burnett:  5 Give ear to my words, O Lord,
Consider my [b]groaning.
Heed the sound of my cry for help, my King and my God,
For to You I pray.
In the morning, O Lord, [c]You will hear my voice;
In the morning I will order my [d]prayer to You and eagerly watch.
For You are not a God who takes pleasure in wickedness;
No evil [e]dwells with You.
The boastful shall not stand before Your eyes;
You hate all who do iniquity.
You destroy those who speak falsehood;
The Lord abhors the man of bloodshed and deceit.
But as for me, by Your abundant lovingkindness I will enter Your house,
[f]At Your holy temple I will bow in reverence for You.
O Lord, lead me in Your righteousness because of [g]my foes;
Make Your way [h]straight before me.
There is nothing [i]reliable in [j]what they say;
Their inward part is destruction itself.
Their throat is an open grave;
They [k]flatter with their tongue.
10 Hold them guilty, O God;
By their own devices let them fall!
In the multitude of their transgressions thrust them out,
For they are rebellious against You.
11 But let all who take refuge in You be glad,
Let them ever sing for joy;
And [l]may You shelter them,
That those who love Your name may exult in You.
12 For it is You who blesses the righteous man, O Lord,
You surround him with favor as with a shield.  This is a beautiful Psalm that could not have come at a more perfect time.  Verse 12 is especially comforting.  Those of us in Christ have been given Christ’s righteousness and God blesses the righteous man.  Unmerited favor called grace that has protected us to this very moment so we can write about how great our God truly is.

Krista Cook:  After David offers his prayer, he says he will look up - wait in expectation.  Do I do this with my prayers?  Probably not often enough.
The rest of this psalm goes back and forth between the unrighteous and righteous. I know I want to be on the side of the righteous!

Mike Grimm:  O Lord, hear me as I pray;
    pay attention to my groaning.
Listen to my cry for help, my King and my God,
    for I pray to no one but you.
Listen to my voice in the morning, Lord.
    Each morning I bring my requests to you and wait expectantly.
David told the LORD that he would pray early in the morning. Christians must pray like David did. It is important to pray every morning. It is also important to look for the answer from God.

O God, you take no pleasure in wickedness;
    you cannot tolerate the sins of the wicked.
Therefore, the proud may not stand in your presence,
    for you hate all who do evil.
You will destroy those who tell lies.
    The Lord detests murderers and deceivers.
The enemies of David were really the enemies of God. David says that God will destroy them. Really, they destroy themselves. We destroy ourselves if we do not ask God for help. Even the enemies of God can ask for help. Then they will become God's friends.

Because of your unfailing love, I can enter your house;
    I will worship at your Temple with deepest awe.
Lead me in the right path, O Lord,
    or my enemies will conquer me.
Make your way plain for me to follow.
David did not have a temple in Jerusalem. He had a tent. David met God there. Our God is everywhere. We meet him when we pray to him. It is good to pray the words of Psalm 5:8. A straight path means a good path. "Lead me in the right path, O LORD, or my enemies will conquer me” means this: Help me to obey you, God. My enemies are making it difficult for me to obey you.

My enemies cannot speak a truthful word.
    Their deepest desire is to destroy others.
Their talk is foul, like the stench from an open grave.
    Their tongues are filled with flattery.
10 O God, declare them guilty.
    Let them be caught in their own traps.
Drive them away because of their many sins,
    for they have rebelled against you.
David is not asking for anything that they wouldn't receive in a human court of law. David doesn't even ask to be part of the justice. He simply prays, "Lord, let them be caught in their own traps, let them be entangled in their own nets, let them fall by their own devices

11 But let all who take refuge in you rejoice;
    let them sing joyful praises forever.
Spread your protection over them,
    that all who love your name may be filled with joy.
12 For you bless the godly, O Lord;
    you surround them with your shield of love.
The LORD is all around the people that love him. He is like a cover over them that stops people from hurting them. This makes the people of God happy, even when their enemies are near. That GOD may be like a shield for the just was first revealed to Abraham (Gen. 15:1), but it alludes here to one who serves to protect the entire body.
