Rachel Workman: 9 Then Jesus went over to their
synagogue, 10 where he noticed a man with a deformed hand. The Pharisees asked
Jesus, “Does the law permit a person to work by healing on the Sabbath?” (They
were hoping he would say yes, so they could bring charges against him.)
11 And he answered, “If you had a sheep that fell into a well on the Sabbath, wouldn’t you work to pull it out? Of course you would. 12 And how much more valuable is a person than a sheep! Yes, the law permits a person to do good on the Sabbath.”
13 Then he said to the man, “Hold out your hand.” So the man held out his hand, and it was restored, just like the other one! 14 Then the Pharisees called a meeting to plot how to kill Jesus. This is the perfect example of a hardened heart. Jesus just healed a mans deformed hand in front of their eyes and what do they do? Plot his death! That just reiterates that Jesus is and has authority over evil and will use it for His glory.

John
Burnett: 9 Departing from there, He went into
their synagogue. 10 And a man was there whose hand was
withered. And they questioned [f]Jesus, asking, “Is it lawful
to heal on the Sabbath?”—so that they might accuse Him. 11 And
He said to them, “What man [g]is there among you who [h]has a sheep, and if it falls
into a pit on the Sabbath, will he not take hold of it and lift it out? 12 How
much more valuable then is a man than a sheep! So then, it is lawful to do [i]good on the Sabbath.” 13 Then
He *said to the man, “Stretch out your hand!” He stretched it out, and it was
restored to [j]normal, like the other. 14 But
the Pharisees went out and [k]conspired against Him, as
to how they might destroy Him. As a
Christian, I know I struggle when it comes to judging people for the things
they do, but I do many of the same things they do. Sin is sin and it all
has a cost and a consequence. We either let Jesus be the one to pay for
it, or we pay for ourselves. Thank you Jesus for paying for my sin.

Grimm: 9 Going on from that place, he went into their
synagogue, 10 and a man with a shriveled hand was there.
Looking for a reason to bring charges against Jesus, they asked him, “Is it
lawful to heal on the Sabbath?” The Pharisees tried to trick
Jesus by asking him if it was legal to heal on the Sabbath. Their Sabbath rules
said that people could be helped on the Sabbath only if their lives were in
danger. Jesus healed on the Sabbath several times, and none of those healings
were in response to emergencies. If Jesus had waited until another day, he
would have been submitting to the Pharisees’ authority, showing that their
petty rules were equal to God’s law. But Jesus made it clear how ridiculous and
petty their rules were. God is a God of people, not rules. The best time to
reach out to someone is when they need help.
11 He said to them, “If any of you has a sheep and it
falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will you not take hold of it and lift it out? 12 How
much more valuable is a person than a sheep! Therefore it is lawful to do good
on the Sabbath.”
The Pharisees placed their laws
above human need. They were so concerned about Jesus’ breaking one of their
rules that they did not care about this man’s shriveled hand. This should make
us think about our attitudes towards others. If our convictions don’t allow us
to help certain people, our convictions may not be in tune with God’s Word. We
must never allow dogma to blind us to human needs
13 Then he said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” So
he stretched it out and it was completely restored, just as sound as the other.
14 But the Pharisees went out and plotted how they might kill
Jesus. The Pharisees plotted Jesus’ death
because they were outraged. Jesus had overruled their authority (Luke 6:11) and had exposed their evil
attitudes in front of the entire crowd in the synagogue. Jesus had showed that
the Pharisees were more loyal to their religious system than to God.
