Rachel Workman: 15 But Jesus knew what they were planning. So he left that area,
and many people followed him. He healed all the sick among them, 16 but he
warned them not to reveal who he was. 17 This fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah
concerning him:
18 “Look at my Servant, whom I have chosen.
He is my Beloved, who pleases me.
I will put my Spirit upon him,
and he will proclaim justice to the nations.
19 He will not fight or shout
or raise his voice in public.
20 He will not crush the weakest reed
or put out a flickering candle.
Finally he will cause justice to be victorious.
21 And his name will be the hope
of all the world.”
These are beautiful verses. In verse 18 is
says He is my Beloved, who pleases me yet God watched him suffer and die on the
cross for us. How beloved we are to God that be would endure that for our
salvation. I will put my Spirit upon him, I love that! It's by God's Spirit
that Jesus is able to proclaim justice to the nation. Verse 19 reminds of a
couple readings back where Jesus said Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you,
because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls
Truly a beautiful reading today.

John
Burnett: 15 But Jesus, [a]aware of this,
withdrew from there. Many followed Him, and He healed them all, 16 and
warned them not to [b]tell who He was. 17 This
was to fulfill what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet:
18 “Behold,
My [c]Servant whom I [d]have chosen;
My Beloved in whom My soul [e]is well-pleased;
I will put My Spirit upon Him,
And He shall proclaim [f]justice to the [g]Gentiles.
19 “He will not quarrel, nor cry out;
Nor will anyone hear His voice in the streets.
20 “A battered reed He will not break off,
And a smoldering wick He will not put out,
Until He [h]leads [i]justice to victory.
21 “And in His name the [j]Gentiles will hope.”
My Beloved in whom My soul [e]is well-pleased;
I will put My Spirit upon Him,
And He shall proclaim [f]justice to the [g]Gentiles.
19 “He will not quarrel, nor cry out;
Nor will anyone hear His voice in the streets.
20 “A battered reed He will not break off,
And a smoldering wick He will not put out,
Until He [h]leads [i]justice to victory.
21 “And in His name the [j]Gentiles will hope.”
This Prophecy is fulfilled
and we have hope because it happened just as Isaiah said it would. The
temptation of taking out the Pharisees when He knew what they were doing would
be very hard not to succumb to but He was perfect and because He was perfect we
can celebrate the hope we have in Him. Only Jesus is worthy of our
praise.

Allen Michaels: 15 Aware of this, Jesus withdrew from that place. A
large crowd followed him, and he healed all who were ill. 16 He
warned them not to tell others about him. 17 This was to
fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah:
18 “Here is my servant whom I have chosen,
the one I love, in whom I delight;
I will put my Spirit on him,
and he will proclaim justice to the nations.
19 He will not quarrel or cry out;
no one will hear his voice in the streets.
20 A bruised reed he will not break,
and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out,
till he has brought justice through to victory.
21 In his name the nations will put their hope.”
the one I love, in whom I delight;
I will put my Spirit on him,
and he will proclaim justice to the nations.
19 He will not quarrel or cry out;
no one will hear his voice in the streets.
20 A bruised reed he will not break,
and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out,
till he has brought justice through to victory.
21 In his name the nations will put their hope.”
The people expected the Messiah to
be a king. They wanted somebody who was going to fight for them. This quotation
from Isaiah’s prophecy (Isaiah 42:1-4) showed that the Messiah was indeed a
king, but it illustrated what kind of king—a quiet, gentle ruler who brings
justice to the nations. Like the crowd in Jesus’ day, we may want Christ to
rule as a king and bring great and visible victories in our lives. But often
Christ’s work is quiet, and it happens according to His perfect timing,
not ours.
I find the different
translations of Isaiah 42:1-4 interesting.
42 “Here is my
servant, whom I uphold,
my chosen one in whom I delight;
I will put my Spirit on him,
and he will bring justice to the nations.
2 He will not shout or cry out,
or raise his voice in the streets.
3 A bruised reed he will not break,
and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out.
In faithfulness he will bring forth justice;
4 he will not falter or be discouraged
till he establishes justice on earth.
In his teaching the islands will put their hope.” (Isaiah 42:1-4 NIV)
