Rachel Workman: 44 “The Kingdom of Heaven is like a treasure that a man discovered hidden in a field. In his excitement, he hid it again and sold everything he owned to get enough money to buy the field.
45 “Again, the Kingdom of Heaven is like a merchant on the lookout for choice pearls. 46 When he discovered a pearl of great value, he sold everything he owned and bought it! We are called to sell out, meaning we must get rid of all sin. How is that possible? ONLY through the blood of Christ.
47 “Again, the Kingdom of Heaven is like a fishing net that was thrown into the water and caught fish of every kind. 48 When the net was full, they dragged it up onto the shore, sat down, and sorted the good fish into crates, but threw the bad ones away. 49 That is the way it will be at the end of the world. The angels will come and separate the wicked people from the righteous, 50 throwing the wicked into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. 51 Do you understand all these things?”
“Yes,” they said, “we do.”
52 Then he added, “Every teacher of religious law who becomes a disciple in the Kingdom of Heaven is like a homeowner who brings from his storeroom new gems of truth as well as old.”

John
Burnett: 44 “The kingdom of heaven is like a
treasure hidden in the field, which a man found and hid again; and from
joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. The treasure of heaven is worth all we have but is ours
because Jesus gave His life.
A Costly Pearl
45 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like
a merchant seeking fine pearls, 46 and upon finding one pearl
of great value, he went and sold all that he had and bought it.
A Dragnet
47 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like
a dragnet cast into the sea, and gathering fish of every kind; 48 and
when it was filled, they drew it up on the beach; and they sat down and
gathered the good fish into containers, but the bad they threw away. 49 So
it will be at the [a]end of the age; the angels
will come forth and [b]take out the wicked from
among the righteous, 50 and will throw them into the furnace of
fire; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. When I share the gospel of Jesus Christ with people, they
don’t like to hear this part. They say I shouldn’t judge them.
Their hearts are so in love with their own sin that they cannot see that I am
warning them because I love them. When they ask, “Why do I need Jesus?”
they really don’t want to know the answer because they don’t think they need
him.
51 “Have you understood all these
things?” They *said to Him, “Yes.” 52 And [c]Jesus said to them,
“Therefore every scribe who has become a disciple of the kingdom of heaven is
like a head of a household, who brings out of his treasure things new and old.”

Allen Michaels: The Parables of the
Hidden Treasure and the Pearl
44 “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a
field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold
all he had and bought that field.
45 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant
looking for fine pearls. 46 When he found one of great value,
he went away and sold everything he had and bought it.
The Kingdom of heaven is more
valuable than anything else we can have, and a person must be willing to give
up everything to obtain it.
The Parable of the Net
47 “Once again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net
that was let down into the lake and caught all kinds of fish. 48 When
it was full, the fishermen pulled it up on the shore. Then they sat down and
collected the good fish in baskets, but threw the bad away. 49 This
is how it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come and separate the
wicked from the righteous 50 and throw them into the blazing
furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
This parable has the same meaning as
the parable of the wheat and weeds. We are to obey God and tell others about
his grace and goodness. But we cannot dictate who is part of the kingdom of
heaven, and who is not.
51 “Have you understood all these things?” Jesus asked.
“Yes,” they replied.
52 He said to them, “Therefore every teacher of the law
who has become a disciple in the kingdom of heaven is like the owner of a house
who brings out of his storeroom new treasures as well as old.”
Anyone who understands God’s real
purpose in the law as revealed in the Old Testament has a real treasure. The
Old Testament points the way to Jesus, the Messiah. Jesus always upheld its
authority and relevance. But there is a double benefit to those who understand
Jesus’ teaching about the kingdom of heaven. This was a new treasure that Jesus
was revealing. Both the old and new teaching give practical guidelines for
faith and for living in the world. The religious leaders, however, were trapped
in the old and blind to the new. They were looking for a future kingdom preceded
by judgment. Jesus, however, taught that the kingdom was now and the
judgment was in the future.
