Rachel Workman: 2 A few days later, when Jesus again entered Capernaum,
the people heard that he had come home. 2 They gathered in such
large numbers that there was no room left, not even outside the door, and he
preached the word to them. 3 Some men came, bringing to him a
paralyzed man, carried by four of them. 4 Since they could not
get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus
by digging through it and then lowered the mat the man was lying on. 5 When
Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralyzed man, “Son, your sins are
forgiven.”
6 Now
some teachers of the law were sitting there, thinking to themselves, 7 “Why
does this fellow talk like that? He’s blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God
alone?”
8 Immediately
Jesus knew in his spirit that this was what they were thinking in their hearts,
and he said to them, “Why are you thinking these things? 9 Which
is easier: to say to this paralyzed man, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say,
‘Get up, take your mat and walk’? 10 But I want you to know
that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the
man, 11 “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.” 12 He
got up, took his mat and walked out in full view of them all. This amazed
everyone and they praised God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this!”
Sin
starts in the heart with a simple thought. Why we try to hide the things we've
done or are thinking of doing from Jesus is beyond me. No one knows us or our
hearts better than Jesus does. He knows our sin before we've even committed it.
Why not just come clean and confess our sins to Christ before we commit them?
Tell him we're struggling with it. Let him help us resist sin instead of
keeping it to ourselves like a secret. What we forget is it's already been
revealed to the Father. Trust me when I say I'm speaking to my own self here
:|. I'm a slow learner.

John Burnett:
2 When
He had come back to Capernaum several days afterward, it was heard that He was
at home. 2 And many
were gathered together, so that there was no longer room, not even near the
door; and He was speaking the word to them.3 And they *came, bringing to Him
a paralytic, carried by four men. 4 Being unable to [a]get
to Him because of the crowd, they removed the roof [b]above
Him; and when they had dug an opening, they let down the pallet on which the
paralytic was lying. 5 And
Jesus seeing their faith *said to the paralytic, “[c]Son,
your sins are forgiven.” 6 But
some of the scribes were sitting there and reasoning in their hearts, 7 “Why does this man speak that
way? He is blaspheming; who can forgive sins [d]but
God alone?” 8 Immediately
Jesus, aware [e]in
His spirit that they were reasoning that way within themselves, *said to
them, “Why are you reasoning about these things in your hearts?9 Which is easier, to say to
the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven’; or to say, ‘Get up, and pick up
your pallet and walk’? 10 But
so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive
sins”—He *said to the paralytic,11 “I
say to you, get up, pick up your pallet and go home.” 12 And he got up and immediately
picked up the pallet and went out in the sight of everyone, so that they were
all amazed and were glorifying God, saying, “We have never seen anything
like this.”
Jesus
knows our thoughts which makes Him even more amazing when He forgives us of
those sins as well. We are all crippled by our sins but in His amazing
grace He forgives us of those sins so that we can have a relationship with Him.

Grimm: 2 A
few days later, when Jesus again entered Capernaum, the people heard that he
had come home. 2 They gathered in such large numbers that there
was no room left, not even outside the door, and he preached the word to them. 3 Some
men came, bringing to him a paralyzed man, carried by four of them. The
paralytic’s need moved his friends to action, and they brought him to Jesus.
When we recognize someone’s need, do we act? Many people have physical and
spiritual needs we can meet, either by ourself or with others who are also
concerned. Human need moved these four men; let it also move us to
compassionate action. 4 Since they could not get him to
Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus by
digging through it and then lowered the mat the man was lying on. 5 When
Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralyzed man, “Son, your sins are
forgiven.”
6 Now
some teachers of the law were sitting there, thinking to themselves, 7 “Why
does this fellow talk like that? He’s blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God
alone?”
Before telling the paralytic to “get up,” Jesus said, “Son, your sins are
forgiven.” This must have made the Jewish leaders go insane as this was blasphemous
to them. In their eyes Jesus was claiming to do something that only God could
do, and it was punishable by death. They understood Jesus correctly, but their
judgment of him was so very wrong. Jesus was not blaspheming because his claim
was true. Jesus is God, and he proved his claim by healing the paralytic.
10 But I want you to know
that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So
he said to the man, This is the first time in Mark that Jesus is referred to as
the “Son of Man.” The title Son of Man emphasizes that Jesus is fully
human. When we see Jesus referred to as the Son of God (for example in
John 20:31) it emphasizes that he is fully God. As God’s Son, Jesus has the
authority to forgive sin. As a man, he can identify with our deepest needs and
sufferings and help us overcome sin. 11 “I tell you, get up, take your mat and
go home.” 12 He got up, took his mat and walked out in full
view of them all. This amazed everyone and they praised God, saying, “We have
never seen anything like this!”

Tomorrow's reading for Mark 2:13-17
13 Once
again Jesus went out beside the lake. A large crowd came to him, and he began
to teach them. 14 As he walked along, he saw Levi son of
Alphaeus sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow me,” Jesus told him, and
Levi got up and followed him.
15 While
Jesus was having dinner at Levi’s house, many tax collectors and sinners were
eating with him and his disciples, for there were many who followed him. 16 When
the teachers of the law who were Pharisees saw him eating with the sinners and
tax collectors, they asked his disciples: “Why does he eat with tax collectors
and sinners?”
17 On
hearing this, Jesus said to them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but
the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”
