Proverbs 1:20-33

Rachel Workman: 20 Wisdom shouts in the streets.
    She cries out in the public square.
21 She calls to the crowds along the main street,
    to those gathered in front of the city gate:
22 “How long, you simpletons,
    will you insist on being simpleminded?
How long will you mockers relish your mocking?
    How long will you fools hate knowledge?
23 Come and listen to my counsel.
I’ll share my heart with you
    and make you wise.
24 “I called you so often, but you wouldn’t come.
    I reached out to you, but you paid no attention.
25 You ignored my advice
    and rejected the correction I offered.
26 So I will laugh when you are in trouble!
    I will mock you when disaster overtakes you—
27 when calamity overtakes you like a storm,
    when disaster engulfs you like a cyclone,
    and anguish and distress overwhelm you.
28 “When they cry for help, I will not answer.
    Though they anxiously search for me, they will not find me.
29 For they hated knowledge
    and chose not to fear the Lord. There isn't a day that passes that I don't think or pray for more wisdom. With wisdom there is power. Power to overcome the sins that haunt us in this life.
30 They rejected my advice
    and paid no attention when I corrected them.
31 Therefore, they must eat the bitter fruit of living their own way,
    choking on their own schemes. And that they do. The repercussions of sin is bitter for anyone.
32 For simpletons turn away from me—to death.
    Fools are destroyed by their own complacency. Ah, don't we see this all the time? Knowing you need to do something about Christ and not doing it could lead to death. We are not promised tomorrow.
33 But all who listen to me will live in peace,
    untroubled by fear of harm.”

John Burnett:
20 Out in the open wisdom calls aloud,    she raises her voice in the public square;21 on top of the wall[a] she cries out,    at the city gate she makes her speech:
22 “How long will you who are simple love your simple ways?    How long will mockers delight in mockery    and fools hate knowledge? These are good questions for today.  I believe God has sent His delusion so some will never change or think about repenting.
23 Repent at my rebuke!    Then I will pour out my thoughts to you,    I will make known to you my teachings.24 But since you refuse to listen when I call    and no one pays attention when I stretch out my hand,25 since you disregard all my advice    and do not accept my rebuke,26 I in turn will laugh when disaster strikes you;    I will mock when calamity overtakes you—27 when calamity overtakes you like a storm,    when disaster sweeps over you like a whirlwind,    when distress and trouble overwhelm you.
28 “Then they will call to me but I will not answer;    they will look for me but will not find me,29 since they hated knowledge    and did not choose to fear the LordTo Fear the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.  He will laugh when they are overtaken because they were basically their own god and thought they could do all without god.
30 Since they would not accept my advice    and spurned my rebuke,31 they will eat the fruit of their ways    and be filled with the fruit of their schemes.32 For the waywardness of the simple will kill them,    and the complacency of fools will destroy them;33 but whoever listens to me will live in safety    and be at ease, without fear of harm.”  What a wonderful promise we are given in this last verse.

Allen Michaels: 20 Out in the open wisdom calls aloud,
    she raises her voice in the public square;
21 on top of the wall she cries out,
    at the city gate she makes her speech:
The wisdom of God is described as coming to the busiest intersection of the city and crying out for people to listen. God has a great desire for us to receive and possess His wisdom, and He offers His divine wisdom to us. Personally, we have access to the Word of God, and the Lord is urging us to make use of it: consult it, accept it, trust it, obey it, and live by it.
22 “How long will you who are simple love your simple ways?
    How long will mockers delight in mockery
    and fools hate knowledge?
23 Repent at my rebuke!
    Then I will pour out my thoughts to you,
    I will make known to you my teachings.
If you turn to the wisdom of God and heed its command to turn to the ways of God, the Holy Spirit will give you understanding and will help you to walk in the way of God’s truth.
24 But since you refuse to listen when I call
    and no one pays attention when I stretch out my hand,
25 since you disregard all my advice
    and do not accept my rebuke,
26 I in turn will laugh when disaster strikes you;
    I will mock when calamity overtakes you—
On the day of judgment the response of God towards the sinner who has spurned and rejected God’s counsel will be scornful rejection.
27 when calamity overtakes you like a storm,
    when disaster sweeps over you like a whirlwind,
    when distress and trouble overwhelm you.
28 “Then they will call to me but I will not answer;
    they will look for me but will not find me,
29 since they hated knowledge
    and did not choose to fear the Lord.
30 Since they would not accept my advice
    and spurned my rebuke,
31 they will eat the fruit of their ways
    and be filled with the fruit of their schemes.
32 For the waywardness of the simple will kill them,
    and the complacency of fools will destroy them;
What is being referred to is the false confidence that the fool entertains—namely, that all will be well with his soul, even though he ignores and rejects the commandments of God and refuses to surrender his life to Christ the Savior—that false confidence will eventually destroy him, consigning him to the righteous judgment of God.
33 but whoever listens to me will live in safety
    and be at ease, without fear of harm.”

Tomorrow's reading for Proverbs 2:1-11

My child,[a] listen to what I say,
    and treasure my commands.
Tune your ears to wisdom,
    and concentrate on understanding.
Cry out for insight,
    and ask for understanding.
Search for them as you would for silver;
    seek them like hidden treasures.
Then you will understand what it means to fear the Lord,
    and you will gain knowledge of God.
For the Lord grants wisdom!
    From his mouth come knowledge and understanding.
He grants a treasure of common sense to the honest.
    He is a shield to those who walk with integrity.
He guards the paths of the just
    and protects those who are faithful to him.
Then you will understand what is right, just, and fair,
    and you will find the right way to go.
10 For wisdom will enter your heart,
    and knowledge will fill you with joy.
11 Wise choices will watch over you.
    Understanding will keep you safe.
