27 “You have heard the commandment that says, ‘You must not
commit adultery.’[k] 28 But I say, anyone who
even looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in
his heart. 29 So if your eye—even your good eye[l]—causes you to lust, gouge it
out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body
than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. 30 And if your
hand—even your stronger hand[m]—causes you to sin, cut it off
and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than
for your whole body to be thrown into hell. 31 “You have heard the law that says, ‘A man can divorce his wife by merely giving her a written notice of divorce.’[n] 32 But I say that a man who divorces his wife, unless she has been unfaithful, causes her to commit adultery. And anyone who marries a divorced woman also commits adultery. |
43 If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It’s better
to enter eternal life with only one hand than to go into the unquenchable
fires of hell[i] with two hands.[j] 45 If your foot causes you
to sin, cut it off. It’s better to enter eternal life with only one foot than
to be thrown into hell with two feet.[k] 47 And if your eye causes
you to sin, gouge it out. It’s better to enter the Kingdom of God with only
one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell, 48 ‘where the
maggots never die and the fire never goes out.’ I think the theme here is to avoid temptation. Avoid the things that cause you to sin. Do away with or throw away whatever is standing in the way of living the way God wants us to live. |
18 “For example, a man who
divorces his wife and marries someone else commits adultery. And anyone who
marries a woman divorced from her husband commits adultery.”

18 “For example, a man who divorces his

woman divorced from her husband commits adultery.”
These are some of the most
condemning verses in the Bible. God’s standard is perfection and we
(men especially)fall so short in this area. Satan knows men’s weakness
and he continually uses women as bait for us to sin. When we accept the
free gift of salvation, we also get Jesus’s perfect record in this
area. Divorce is a consequence, many times, due to men’s weakness
although women are becoming more and more promiscuous. Some of the most
godly people I know have had a divorce, have remarried, and according to
these verses, are committing adultery, yet God doesn’t see that because all
he sees when he looks at them is Jesus’s righteousness. Isn’t God’s
grace amazing?

divorce so lightly.
