Matthew 6:22-24, Luke 11:34-36 and 16:13 (The Sound Eye) (On Serving Two Masters)

Rachel Workman:
Matthew
Mark
Luke
John
(The Sound Eye)
22 “Your eye is a lamp that provides light for your body. When your eye is good, your whole body is filled with light. 23 But when your eye is bad, your whole body is filled with darkness. And if the light you think you have is actually darkness, how deep that darkness is!

(On Serving Two Masters)
24 “No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.
The love of money is a fine line. We need money to survive. Anything you put before God is an idol. Anything you love more than God is an idol. I love a lot of things and I put a lot of things before God. It is something I need to keep in check all the time.

(The Sound Eye)
34 “Your eye is a lamp that provides light for your body. When your eye is good, your whole body is filled with light. But when it is bad, your body is filled with darkness. 35 Make sure that the light you think you have is not actually darkness. 36 If you are filled with light, with no dark corners, then your whole life will be radiant, as though a floodlight were filling you with light.” Very good advice. Make sure you know what you think you know. Do I have the right Jesus? The Jesus who died for my sins? The Jesus whose very breath breathed the words of the Bible, whose very life inspired the writings of the Bible? Or am I allowing the world's perception of God to pervert my faith?

(On Serving Two Masters)
13 “No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”

(The Sound Eye)

22 “Your eye is a lamp that provides light for your body. When your eye is good, your whole body is filled with light. 23 But when your eye is bad, your whole body is filled with darkness. And if the light you think you have is actually darkness, how deep that darkness is! Spiritual vision is our capacity to see clearly what God wants us to do and to see the world from His point of view. However, self-serving desires, interests, and goals block that vision. Serving God is the best way to restore it. A “good” eye is one that is fixed on God.

  (On Serving Two Masters)

24 “No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money. We live in a materialistic society where many people serve money. Money is just one of many “Gods” that we may serve without even realizing it. Many people spend their entire lives collecting and storing money, only to die and leave it behind, Their desire for money and what it can buy far outweighs their commitment to God and spiritual matters. Don’t fall into the materialistic trap, because “the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil” (1 Timothy 6:10). We have to ask ourselves which one occupies more of our thoughts, time and efforts.

Jesus is calling for a decision that allows us to live contentedly with whatever we have because we have chosen what is eternal and lasting.

(The Sound Eye)

34 “Your eye is a lamp that provides light for your body. When your eye is good, your whole body is filled with light. But when it is bad, your body is filled with darkness. 35 Make sure that the light you think you have is not actually darkness. 36 If you are filled with light, with no dark corners, then your whole life will be radiant, as though a floodlight were filling you with light.” The lamp is Christ; the eye represents spiritual understanding and insight. Evil desires make the eye less sensitive and blot out the light of Christ’s presence.

(On Serving Two Masters)

13 “No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.” Money has the power to take God’s place in your life. It can become your master without you even realizing it. Money is a hard master and a deceptive one. Wealth promises power and control, but often it cannot deliver. No amount of money can provide health, happiness, or eternal life. How much better it is to let God be your master. His servants have peace of mind and security, both now and forever.
