(The House Built upon the Rock)
24 “Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like
a person who builds a house on solid rock. 25 Though the rain
comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that
house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock. 26 But
anyone who hears my teaching and doesn’t obey it is foolish, like a person
who builds a house on sand. 27 When the rains and floods come
and the winds beat against that house, it will collapse with a mighty crash.”
(The Effect of the Sermon)
28 When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were
amazed at his teaching, 29 for he taught with real
authority—quite unlike their teachers of religious law.
|
When we hear the word of God and we really
hear it, when we believe that Christ is who he says he is and he has done
what he says he has done, when we ask for forgiveness of our sins, our
foundation is being build upon a solid rock. No sorrow or pain can cause that
foundation to be washed away. We are forever his, resting in his peace and
mercy awaiting the day of our glorious salvation.
I shutter to think of what happens to those
who hear and do not believe. There is no peace or mercy. And worst of all no
salvation.
(The Effect of the Sermon)
21 Jesus and his companions went to the town of Capernaum. When the
Sabbath day came, he went into the synagogue and began to teach. 22 The
people were amazed at his teaching, for he taught with real authority—quite
unlike the teachers of religious law.

(The House Built upon the Rock)
6:47 I will show you what it’s like when someone comes to me, listens
to my teaching, and then follows it. 48 It is like a person
building a house who digs deep and lays the foundation on solid rock. When the
floodwaters rise and break against that house, it stands firm because it is
well built. 49 But anyone who hears and doesn’t obey is like
a person who builds a house without a foundation. When the floods sweep down
against that house, it will collapse into a heap of ruins.”

Those that
have built their house on the sand are also easily blown off the narrow way
going through the narrow gate.
